The Rohingya people are people who live in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. Burma has been a region of refugees since the late eighteenth century. The tension grew between the Rohingya minority and the Burmese government after Burma received its independence in January 1948. The tension was because of how in 1947 the Rohingya had formed an army and approached President Jinnah of Pakistan to move northern Arkan into East Pakistan. This approach made the Burmese feel threatened about their territory, independence, and made them not trust the Rohingya people. This lead to a group of Arakanese Muslims to go on the political offense and push for the integration of Maungdaw and Buthidaung into East Pakistan. This was rejected by the Constituent Assembly in Rangoon later on. Later on, Rohingya was ruled by the Burmese government under a militaristic styled government. The Rohingyas claims were to be an indigenous ethnic group and were denied by the many government groups that have ruled Burma. To this day Rohingya which is still inside Burma has remained dismal and the Rohingya people have lost many basic rights such as human rights and citizenship. Burmese authorities consider the Rohingyas to be “resident foreigners” and are subjected to these abuses such as limits on freedom, confiscation of property, and denial of citizenship. This opinions lead to many genocides in Rohingya. Not to long ago in June 2012 Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rogingya had a wide spread of tension which lead to a wide spread of violence in the country. Currently Aung San Suu Kyi has banned officials to stop using the name Rohingya in an attempt to end the tension between Buddhist and and minority Muslim.

Reports from both the Guardian and Newsweek confirm that 24 inmates have been killed in a Malaysian Jail. There are also reports that inmates were deprived of water, so much so they were forced to drink toilet water by the guards. “They gave us only one small cup of water with our meals, otherwise we had to drink toilet water. Only when someone was about to die would the guards come. Otherwise, if we complained, or if we asked to go to the hospital, they beat us,” claimed Mouyura Begum. Mouyura Bergum is an 18 year old inmate who has been detained for nearly a year now. Of the 24 inmates who died in the camps, only two were not Burmese. The Guardian described the treatment of the inmates to be a “torture”, slowly depriving them of water until they died in captivity.

One of the major organizations that are trying to save Rohingya is Partners in Relief and Development. Their Hashtag #SaveTheRohingya has the goal of to help face the very threat of genocide and to help the cries. They have started a hashtag to spread awareness so people can make a donation, start their own campaign, and share their story by posting on their social media with the hashtag #Rohingya. With the money they raise they will send rice, animals, vegetables, and water pumps. Rice and vegetables are to improve child nutritional. The animals can help establish new sources of income through farming. The water pumps can pump fresh water so people can access clean water and increase sanitation. As students at Mills High School, we can help by showing awareness to the many genocides that are heppening currently in Burma. We as students can tell our families to go on to http://www.partners.ngo/save-the-rohingya where our families can donate. My family is from Burma and we are currently aware of this tragic event. As good citizens me and my family have donated money to a family in need so they can survive this genocide as long as they can.

The U.S. has reacted positively towards the refugees, unlike many other countries in the Middle East. Since 2002, the United States has allowed in more than 13,000 refugees, especially in the city of Chicago. In Chicago, one of the largest group of Burmese refugees still resides to this day, showing the United States care for immigrants. In addition to this, former President Barack Obama has strongly urged the country of Myanmar to end its discriminatory behavior against the Burmese people. However, the rest of thw world has not been so kind to the people of Rohingya. An article published only one month ago by The Aljazeera Times claimed “Sri Lanka's navy has arrested 32 people suspected of being Rohingya refugees and their Indian traffickers off the country's northern coast.” Even nearly two years following the worst part of the Immigration, the Burmese people are still being treated like animals. An important fact to note is that this will affect our world too. If the Rohingya people are not able to find a home in the Middle East, it will be our duty as citizens of humanity to allow them into our country. With President Trump’s stance on immigration, however, it may not be as easy as it seems. Further conflicts with the Middle East and the U.S. seem very likely as there are many immigrants who need homes, and we are not able to give it to them if our government continues to keep them out.

As we researched about this topic, we found many facts about this topic. These facts showed us that the Rohingya people are facing many struggle between Burmese officials. We used to be on the side of the Burmese since they are majority of the country and also we thought the Rohingya were invading the country. After hearing that Burmese officials have killed and made Rohingya people have starvation, it got us to realize that the Burmese officials are the actual enemy. After reading a source from http://www.partners.ngo/save-the-rohingya an organization, it persuade us to get involved with the Rohingya people. For if there is a solution, there is always a solution. Our solution is giving a part of Burma to Rohingya since they are suffering and it is what Burma can do to repay for the number of lives they have taken. This topic and final project made us change the way we look at current events because of how we will dive deeper into any topic.
