Frederick was practically born a slave. He was taken away from his mother as an infant. Frederick and happieness have never found each other. He was never sure of his real birthday or his age , neigther did his slave friends.White kids had many other priviliges. Fredericks mother was black ,she died when he was very young, just 7 years old. He never met his father, but suspects that his master was. The only time he was close to his mother was by night a few times a mounth. His mother was a slave 12 milles away from where he was.
By night she took a long walk just to be with her son, so he could fall a sleep. She was never there when he woke up. Even when she got ill he could not be with her. When she died ,he was not allowed to be at the funeral.
There was an older woman whom was caring for the youngest slaves.
He had a horrible childhood, He has seen a lot of violence during his childhood. He was a wittness to a spectacle,to what he himself called a bloody transaction. . A slave that might be a child of the master was abused by the white wife of the master, even the siblings were forced to use violence towards their own brothers.

Nanna og Karolina

Douglass and Solomun are both from the North. They were slaves and had a very bad life under the slaveholder. They used very hard words , because they are very angry at the American nation. They talk about the bad treatment of the slaves by the slaveholder. They want freedom for the black slaves. Douglass writes with feeling and encourage them to be free and not be under the slavery more.

Tibeats mocks the black men by singing a hopeful song, urging them to run away lest they be caught by the "patty roller." This word, also spelled "patter roller" among other variants, was slang for patrolman. The Patrols, also called the Regulators, were semi-official secret police who kept slaves in line in antebellum times. These groups also served as a model for the post-war terror society Ku Klux Klan.
