The Zorba dance (early on called the Hasapiko) originated on a small island in Greece called Crete

Originally the Hasapiko (which means the butchers dance) was performed by men who held each other hands using cloth napkins and aprons. The leader of the dance would usually hold a butchers knife

Later on in the 19th century after Greece gained its independence the dance was performed by military bands and orchestras.

In the 20th century the Hasapiko was modified and used in the movie Zorba the Greek released in 1964. This is when it really gained international popularity. Instead of holding hands with cloth, dancers would wrap each other's arms around their fellow dancers shoulders and dance in a line.

While there are no specific clothing requirements for the Zorba dance, dancers often wear traditional Greek clothing to enhance the cultural experience. For men, this might include a white shirt, black pants, and a vest or jacket. Women may wear a flowing dress or skirt in bright colors, often paired with a shawl or scarf. Dancers may carry items such as flowers, handkerchiefs, or tambourines to add to the festive atmosphere. Often times, the Zorba Dance focuses more on the uplifting mood of the music and the dance as apose to the dress.
