The song places the listener in the head of a soldier. Make someone think about what they went through. When away from home , and away from there loved ones. Being away from loved ones is hard, extremely when there over seas fighting in a war. I think the message Armstrong was trying to send was that the soldiers get lonely, and "wonder".

The song is telling a story of the individuals who are away from their loved ones. It tries to express the emotions and actions of those in need of company. During this point in time it was not easy for everyone. No one knew what was going to happen, especially to the "special" people in their lives. Without knowing that they will return safely, it puts everyone at worry for what the future may hold. Although it is sad, it shares a message about the times. Like John said, everyone is wondering what's in store for their loved ones away and their future.
