The military split up the South into five military districts to help enforce the laws of reconstruction. New elections were held with voting only allowed by Congress approved voters, mostly former slaves. The new variety of voters led to Republican control of a traditionally Democratic south. Tennessee was the only state not under military control because they had a large number of Union supporters and they met most of the Republicans demands for reconstruction.

The 15th amendment gave African Americans the right to vote. In 1870, Hiram Revels became the first African-American to serve in Congress. Between 1865 and 1877, many African Americans served in state and local politics. At the end of Reconstruction, four of its five Congressmen were African-American.

January 2, 1863
We had to free our 700+ slaves yesterday. We established one of the biggest sugar mills in Louisiana and now all that work and money has gone to waste. The estate was valued in excess of $1 million in the 1860s. And now we have no one to work for our family. Anyways, we'll see how this goes. -Meredith

January 3, 1863
We went down to the post office today to put in a job opportunity poster. Hopefully we'll have some letters here soon. Were running low on sugar now that we have no workers.-Meredith

January 8, 1863
We have 18 workers so far that have come in and applied. Oh and our mill is back up and running. I think freeing the slaves might work. I mean, when didn't we do this in the first place and not hold people to work for us against their own will? Be back soon. -Meredith

The Compromise of 1877 is the thing that finally ended it all! The compromise put republican, Rutherford Hayes into office as the nations 19th president. Republicans quietly gave up their fight for racial equality and African-Americans rights in the south. Hayes then took the military out of the south and the southern Republican governments collapsed. Reconstruction then came to an end. Hurrah!

Was Reconstruction a success or a failure? A success.

Reconstruction was a success. The whole purpose of reconstruction was to rebuild the south after the Civil War. The war and reconstruction put the United States in a lot of debt but we still abolished slavery, rebuilt the south, gave African Americans citizenship, and gave African American men the right to vote.
This shows that reconstruction was a success. If reconstruction had failed, our country wouldn't be what it is today. We still have problems with treating each other equally. Although with time, patience, and love, it can happen. Reconstruction was a success.
