Students will create flash card with the name of both 2D and 3D shape and the front and describing its properties. Students will need to have a strong foundation of knowledge of 2D shapes to apply to new content involving 3D shapes. These flash cards can also be used as a scavenger hunt for students to find their matching properties and/or characteristics.

Students can begin to apply nets to real-world objects. Students will begin to recognize how packages for products can be represented as a net. Students can begin challenged to find a package/product around their house to bring into school. Using these objects children can sketch out the nets that match the package they have chosen and find the surface area and volume.

Students will be provided with several different nets. Some nets will correctly form 3D shapes, while others will not fold to correctly form the shape. During this activity students must analyze each net and determine which 3D shapes the net represents, if the net will successfully fold into the intended shape, and if there are miss or extra faces. Students can them organize these shapes and find similarities and differences to help explain and justify their findings.

This activity will reinforce their understanding of 3D shapes and begin to create real world connections. Students will also be challenged to create a short description of their city including important details such as surface area, volume, and a city map.

Students can begin to deepen their understanding by being challenged to create the net of a 3D shapes simply based by looking at them. Once students have created the sketch of their nets students can cut out and glue/tape the net together and compare their creation to the actual shapes. This will deepen students understanding and allows for the opportunity for students to learn from errors made along the way.
