The Nazis use's this to create the Reichstag Fire Decree, which temporarily took away some civil rights and allows for hitler to arrest political opponents.</p></li><li><p>March 13: In the Reichstag elections, the Nazi Party becomes the largest party, with the largest amount of seats but fails to secure an absolute majority.</p></li><li><p>April 10: Paul von Hindenburg is re-elected as President of Germany, defeating Hitler in the presidential election.</p></li><li><p>July 31: The Nazis become the largest party in the Reichstag again, but they still do not have a majority.</p></li><li><p>November 6: In the Reichstag elections, the Nazi Party loses seats but remains the largest party.</p></li><li><p>December 2: President Hindenburg appoints Hitler as Chancellor for the second time, believing he can be controlled by conservative forces.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

This event consolidated Hitler's control over the Nazi Party and the state.</p></li><li><p>August 2: President Paul von Hindenburg dies. Hitler rules both the offices of Chancellor and President, declaring himself Führer (leader) of Germany. The military swears an oath of personal loyalty to Hitler, solidifying his absolute dominace and authority .</p></li><li><p>August 19: A national referendum is held to legitimize Hitler's assumption of the presidency and his merger of the offices of Chancellor and President. The vote yields an overwhelming majority in favor of Hitler's actions.</p></li><li><p>August 20: Hitler's new title of Führer is recognized by the military.</p></li><li><p>October 14: Germany withdraws from the League of Nations, which further isolates the country diplomatically.</p></li><li><p>November 24: Nazi Germany signs a friendship treaty with the Empire of Japan, known as the Anti-Comintern Pact, aimed at countering communism.</p></li></ul>]]></description>
