He talks about the pain he has been through, and talks about how good of a student he was and his studies. The author describes Pi in this part of the story as a small, middle aged man.  Pi talks a lot about a person named Mamaji, who was a great swimmer. Pi was named after Mamaji's favorite pool, the Piscine Molitor in Paris. Pi's dad is the owner of a zoo in India. To foreshadow what's going to happen later on in the book, Pi talks about how he misses someone named Richard Parker. In chapter 7, Pi starts to talk about his favorite teacher, Mr Kumar. Pi's father did this to show Pi and Ravi how dangerous tigers are. Then he went to a bunch of different other animals and showed them how dangerous they can be. Pi talks about how people are more dangerous than animals. Pi talks about how important it is to take care of the animals the right way, and how much of a big deal territory is to the animals. Pi starts to talk to the baker, named Mr. Kumar, and Mr. Kumar starts to talk to Pi about the Islam religion, and he taught Pi the payer routine of the Muslim culture. Pi eventually starts to practice three different religions, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. Pi and the author are talking in a cafe about what Pi had said. After this it goes back to Pi's point of view. One day when Pi was out with his parents three different religious leaders from the Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam community, they are all confused because they don't know why they are all there to see Pi. Pi ended up telling the leaders and his parents that he had been keeping his religious practices a secret from everyone. They try to make Pi choose a religion, but Pi declines and wants to keep practicing all three religions. His brother Ravi would be mean to him for this, telling him that he should be Jewish to so he could get more days of school for religious holidays. They did not know what to say when they first asked the question, they tried to play it off like Pi they did not hear Pi. To try to get Pi off the subject, his mom started to talk about books and other things, but this did not work. Finally, his mom had enough and got Pi a rug. He used the rug everyday outside in his parents backyard to pray. Pi's parents wish that Pi had not chosen religion to practice, and wish he had different things that he liked to do. Pi starts to explain how bad of a time it was in India in the 1970s, he talks about the political problems that were affecting his father, because of this they were going to move out of India. After this we go back to the author's point of view, where the author is at Pi's house,and is talking about meeting Meena, who is Pi's wife. Then Pi talks about how both the teacher Mr. Kumar, and the baker Mr. Kumar both were at the zoo with Pi on the same day. Which then Pi is nice enough to take both of them on a tour of the zoo. Pi starts to talk about zoomorphism , and how rhinos can live in the same place as a group of goats, and will not hurt or kill the goats. Pi's family is about to move from India to Canada. They sold a lot of the animals to other zoos and they were bringing some with them to Canada. They left India on a cargo ship in 1977, and Pi can remember how sad his mother was. He is thrown in a life boat by some crew members. He sees a tiger named Richard Parker needing help in the water, which then Pi helps him get aboard the life boat. As Pi realizes how dangerous Richard Parker is it is too late because he was already at the life boat, so Pi had to jump overboard. In the next chapter Pi goes back in time before the ship sinks, Pi describes that before they sink he hears a loud noise that wakes him up. He went to see what the noise was by himself. Pi began to get scared, so he went back where his family was, but the stairs were flooded. Pi goes back up to the main deck where some of the crew put a life jacket on Pi and threw him on the life boat, where he fell into the tarpaulin, then a zebra jumped off after him, hurting his leg. Then the life boat fell into the water. The story moves back to right after Pi escapes Richard Parker. Pi found a lifebuoy just in time to climb on it, just as a shark passes right by him. When Pi looked up he only saw the zebra, and not the tiger. Pi is still just hanging off the side of the boat. As the ship sank Pi looked for survivors, but found none. Pi started to make his way back up the boat because the tiger was not there, the zebra was also still alive. Then a hyena came out from under the tarpaulin. Pi thought that the hyena must have killed the tiger. Pi realizes that the crew members were trying to use him as bait to get the hyena off the boat, and for them to get on. Pi knows that the hyena is a dangerous animal so he has to be careful. Pi spotted an orangutan, named Orange Juice, floating towards the boat where Orange Juice would get on the boat. She was floating on a net which Pi managed to grab and keep. Pi keeps thinking that someone has to know about the sinking of their ship and has to go look for survivors. Pi used the net to make a barricade from the hyena and other animals. The hyena started to act weird and started to do circles and ended up throwing up. It becomes night time and Pi had no clue what to expect, he hears sounds coming from the hyena and zebra but none of the animals ever get close to him. He hears sounds from under the water, and he knows that someone is below him trying to stay alive just like him. After one full night Pi has high hopes that he will be rescued that day. As he looks in the boat he sees that the hyena has eaten the leg of the zebra. The still alive zebra was in a lot of pain. Entering the second night Pi looks around him and sees that there are a ton of sharks. Pi sees that Orange Juice looks really sad, wondering where her family is. The next day the hyena attacked the zebra, and there was nothing that the zebra could do, so it let the hyena kill it. Some of the blood from the zebra started to fall off the boat which made the sharks start to circle the boat. Eventually the sharks swam away while Orange Juice and the hyena were having a face off. Later the hyena attacked Orange Juice, she put up a really good fight, but was no match for the hyena. This made Pi really upset. The hyena sees Richard Parker under the tarpaulin and walks away and goes to sleep. Meanwhile, Pi starts to talk about the story about how Richard Parker got his name. They called out hunters to capture a panther and instead they found two tigers. The hunter who captured him was named Richard Parker, so that is just what Mr. Patel started calling him. Pi finally realizes that Richard Parker is actually on the life boat with him. Pi was no longer scared of the hyena so he went to explore the boat. Pi found an emergency ration container with food and water. Then after he eats and drinks a little bit he decides if he is going to survive with Richard Parker he needs to build a raft to give him some space. Pi used a bunch of different materials to build the raft. As he is building the raft he hears the tiger killing the hyena. Then after he turns to Pi, there is a rat going by Pi as Richard Parker is staring at him. Pi throws the rat, which gives him just enough time to escape on the raft. The raft worked and Pi also made a rain catcher to start using to get fresh water. Pi thought about waiting until Richard Parker died from being dehydrated, but then realized that would never happen so he had to come up with another plan. Pi recognized that Richard Parker was making a rare noise to show they mean no harm. He goes up to the life boat to get food and sees that Richard Parker marked his territory with his urine. Pi finds something that makes salt water turn into fresh water and sets them up in the water. Pi eats some rations for dinner then goes to bed. The next day Pi tried to fish using parts of his leather boot, but caught nothing. When Pi kills his first fish he cried because he had always been a vegetation and never wanted to kill a living thing. He did kill it and he ate some and gave some to Richard Parker. Pi checked the solar stills and they worked. Pi realized how long it had been since the ship sunk. Pi starts to list names of famous shipwreck survivors, and then starts talking about how he lasted the longest, which was 227 days away at sea. He said that because he kept doing the same thing everyday was the reason he survived. He has to feed himself and Richard Parker everyday. Pi talks about what he is doing to tame Richard Parker and how he knows how to do it. Pi used a turtle shell as a shield when he tried to approach Richard Parker. By the 5th time he was able to tell Richard Parker what to do. Pi kept a diary while he was on the life boat. He carried out religious practice and wrote stuff down about what he did each day. He gets on the furthest side of the boat from Richard Parker and closes the tarpaulin. Pi talks about how his survival is hard to believe and talks about how he was able to gain control over Richard Parker. The rain did a little bit of damage to the boat. Pi kills many birds and eats them. The conditions that Pi is living in are starting to be too hard to live in. It gets so bad that Pi starts to go blind. Pi starts talking to someone, but he does not know who it is, at first he thought that he was just hearing the voice of Richard Parker. Pi starts asking the person questions and then the man tries to kill Pi but before he could Richard Parker jumps and kills the man. Later Pi's can see again and see the man's body laying on the floor. The life boat comes up to an island with food and water, so Richard Parker and Pi go to see what is on the island. They find that the island is full of meerkats which Pi kills some of them for food and brings them back to the boat. There is something wrong with the island, Pi figures out that the island burns his feet at night but not in the day. Pi went to sleep with the merrkats in the trees one night. He found that there were human teeth inside bear fruits in the trees. In the morning Pi got everything he could fit on the boat with him and left the island. Richard Parker left Pi without ever looking back. The life boat finally finds a shore in Mexico.
