Reducing Waste

At the start of the project I cared little about the amount of resources I was recycling and the amount of plastic I used. Throughout the course of the project I've switched to using hydroflasks and metal water bottles to refrain from using extra plastic. The plastic that I do use in my apartment is now washed and recycled. My roommates now have recycling bins in our kitchen as well as in our individual rooms. I've recycled over 10 pounds of plastic and paper within the last few weeks of this semester.

Reducing Waste: Challenges

Some challenges I faced while trying to reduce the amount of plastic I used was switching to a water filter and filtering water instead of buying water from the store. While it saved me money it was time consuming and I had to wait for the water to be filtered and cooled before I was able to use it. Also understanding what items could and could not be recycled was confusing at times.

Before this project I never paid much attention to the amount of energy I was using. But after I started to consider my individual impact on the environment I started doing everything I could to save energy. I noticed that it didn't effect me in any negative way and helped me save money and the environment. I saved energy by charging all my electronics less and only using what I need instead of wasting electricity. I have started shutting down my laptop if I wasn't using it. I also have been not leaving any lights on if they were not needed. When it can to eating I started eating at the cafeteria more instead of using the microwave to cook meals. Overall I am glad I started saving electricitym.

Learning to change how I dispose of my waste.

After the first data collection on the project, I came to realize the significance of how much waste I was throwing out on a daily basis, and how most of these objects are some that can be recycled. I live in apartments where the provide us with a trashcan that they come pick-up, so I had to seek out ways I could recycle some of my waste. After talking to some of the management at the complex, we came to an agreement that I could leave out a separate container that would be recycled. I even got some other people living in my complex to get a recycling bin as well. I was throwing out paper and plastics every day, this change led to a completely full bin worth of recyclable objects every three days.

I reduced using water bottles completely by using a water filter and sticking canteens to carry my water. I would recommend people to buy portable water bottles and buy a water filter that will allow them to drink faucet water- it saves lots of money and plastic in the long run.

How to reduce Water Pollution

As I began the project, I tried to find the easiest ways possible for me to make a better impact each and every day. I finally discovered ways that I could make a difference without really changing my daily routine. I take at least two showers a day, so once I started to reduce my shower time by around 10 minutes each shower, I ended up reducing a bunch of water usage on my behalf. I also started, doing little things like turning off the water when I'm brushing my teeth, and also not doing multiple loads of laundry whenever I could do one big load instead. It was a struggle at first to find things to reduce my ecological footprint but as I figured it out, it felt good to know I'm doing better for the environment.
