8. Alternative Energy

While looking into alternative energy we found that there were two major ways that we could utilize alternative energy on our farm. The first form of alternative energy is wind power, Wind power would be highly profitable because of how we can sell our power back to the grid and provide the town with power. The next form of alternative energy would be biomass energy. This would be a great form of alternative energy because of how our crop rotations make us grow some crops that cannot make it to market. If we utilize these crops we can reduce pollution.

This is a 3 year crop rotation that will give large yields and reduce the need for fertilizer. The way that this crop rotation stands above the rest is because of our reliance on the replenishment of the soil. As seen in the above figure in the first year we will plant Corn like many other Iowa Farmers . During the winter of the first year we keep the Ground clear after harvesting in preparation for planting soybeans in the next march. After the soybeans are done growing we immediately plant winter cereal rye. This crop is to keep erosion down during the winter, also to keep the soil loose during the next planting year. Finally in year three we start with planting Rye and Clover This is good for putting nitrogen into the ground. Following this crop we go to a almost half year of red Clover which can be sold to different pharmaceutical companies and also can be used as feed for hogs.

On our farm we decided to put our water retention basin in the center of our property. Almost against the river. The reason for this spot is because of how if there is water that is going to come off our crop we do not want the sediment to collect in the river that runs through out property. This is why we placed it in such a central location.
