Adoptive parents

My "mother" had two brothers and one sister,  She was the baby of the family, my father had two sisters, he was the oldest of the family. My aunts and uncles were an integral part of our family. I always remember how my aunts and uncles looked like each other and had the same mannerisms. My aunts on my father's side had olive skin tone, as if from the mediterranean, the sisters were feisty, as was my grandmother! My mothers brothers and sisters were fair skinned,they had blue eyes, so did my grandfather,poppa. My mother's eyes were brown, Both my mother and father were of Russian descent. My "Poppa was big and strong, like a Russian Czar, my mother was a strong woman. I consider myself "strong" and that from my mother's side of the family, that's nurture, maybe nature!

My brother is the baby, he was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was in second grade.      Starting with my paternal side,  I only had the opportunity to experience knowing my grandmother who was a humble god-fearing woman. She was tiny in stature, but big in heart. She had a servants heart because she always helped anyone who needed assistance. Additionally, she was a woman of  prayer, integrity, and was highly respected by all who came into her sphere of influence. My time spent with her was steeped in conversations about the value of education, identity,  & helping others.  I came to know about my grandfather through her because he had passed away before my birth. She was extremely vocal about his love of family. He was a strong, wise, and diligent worker. He took his responsibility as a husband and  father seriously. He supplied the family with protection, instruction, support, and love.  The ties of affection , respect, and honor that they had as husband and wife was so deep that it almost took her out of this earth when he passed away. She continued to say, that it was the strength of God and  the words that he imparted to her before he took his last breath that ignited her to carry on in this life. He said, "You have a crucial role to uphold our family so that generations after us will know who they are. You are the smartest, strongest black woman I know and you can do anything. He continued to express to her that death itself could not keep him from watching over and helping her guide their children and family. I wept as my grandmother expressed the depth of their love and soul bond. I must say, that she literally lived out those words and like a shepherd  herding their sheep, she ushered my dad and his two sisters into understanding their true identity.  Grandma was everything that granddad spoke her to be god-fearing, strong, wise, and she became larger than life in my eyes.

The following is what she expressed:
Both valued love for self , family, and neighbors. Additionally, they valued education, representation of family,  determination, respect, and sacrifice.         Both came from a background that was considered poor, yet they were rich in love, respect, and honor for one another, family, and our black people.  My grandfather was a confident, strong, military man. He often recited this black proverb to my mother and her 2 sisters, "If you knock de nose, de eye cry." (This meant) "if you hurt one of the family, you hurt them all."  This proverb helped my mother and her siblings understand the significance of group instead of individual identity.  My grandparents believed that in a world that's fallen short in providing a more holistic, positive, and affirming account of blacks in America, it was up to them as a family to present an anti-deficit view of blacks in society. Therefore, my grandparents were considered radicals because they would host dinners where blacks would come to discuss the deficits of blacks that lie in the structures, policies, and practices of their time (still exist today)  and arrive at solutions that would re-direct explanations for our experiences in this country. It was important to my grandparents that  our lives as black people represented and secured the lives of future generations. Now, I understand why I often go against the grain of the status quo. I'm often perceived as "doing my own thing" instead of doing what is right for humanity. I see that my grandparents were risk-takers and  they were willing to sacrifice their lives for the betterment of our people, particularly at a time when they could have been killed for doing so.
     Additionally, my mother shared how she admired  her mother's humility and nurturing spirit. My grandmother was wise in how she orchestrated the care of their home . She prided herself in her ability to cook and love her family. Furthermore,  my mother admired  the love, loyalty, support, and respect that her parents gave to each other. I've experienced these same attributes through my mother.

     I am the only child between my parents and I am going to highlight some insightful experiences with my parents that has shaped and continue to shape my life. This post will be followed by post #4, which will be my family tree in photographs.
     My father was a tall, respectful,  beautiful man. He possessed a calm, quiet and gentle spirit. Yet, I believe that his intellect and wisdom is what drew people to him. He was always well dressed as most men of his time. He made sure that my mom and I were the same. He was serious about us being who we were as a family and how we presented ourselves in the world. He always ensured that I knew who I was and I was confident being an African-American child in this country. I remember ( between the ages 5-12) he randomly asked me this question, Who are you? Initially, at age 5 I would respond by giving him my full name. My response seem to have given him great joy, until I reached age 13. This time he wasn't satisfied with my usual response. Therefore, I became confused and irritated as he continued to repeat the question 2 more times. Okay the lesson! He began to inform me that it was time for my response to be elevated beyond my name. My response had to shift to one of identity. In that moment, he helped me to understand that my heritage is central to my identity. If I ever chose to be disconnected from my identity, I'll lose my ability to explain the essence of myself and my people to others.
     My mother was a determined woman who sought after and achieved her goal to become a licensed cosmologist. She inspired me as I watched her take care of our home in addition to working outside the home. She definitely took her cooking skills from my grandmother. Her entrepreneurial spirit surfaced when she taught herself to bake and started a cake business from our home. She valued learning, education, family, and taught me to do the same. She would say to me that obtaining knowledge wasn't just for me, it was to pass onto our people so that we all can build and grow together. 
     I can see how my parents were attracted to one another. They shared the same goal of uplifting their people and they imparted that responsibility in me. They believed that giving birth to me was an extension of them and the life and race of our people.
     The impact of what my ancestors, grandparents, and parents imparted in me has helped shape my beliefs as an educator. I belief that being an educator is a high calling that comes with great generational responsibility of birthing others into their life's purpose.
     I conclude with the words that my paternal grandmother left in a letter to me before her death, "My dearest Beatrice (that was her name for me), I charge you to go forth into this world and teach others about the rich heritage of our people. Teach our children how to combat inequity by being highly competent and critically conscious of their place in the world. Teach them to stand confidently in the knowledge of who they are just like your family has taught you." I learned that she wrote this letter when she learned that my parents were having me.

 My sister  is tall like our father, she has dark brown hair , brown eyes, and high cheek bones. She is quite and stays to herself.
 My father comes from a family of nine siblings. He was named after his father. Daddy, tall man with medium brown skin and brown eyes. He was quite and love to fish and hunt. He gave everybody in his family a nick name. My nick mane is Men-a-Mint. 
My mother  is the tenth child of eleven siblings. Her height is about 5'6, medium brown skin, brown eyes and high cheek bones. She is a very strong black women who made sure that her daughter was well taken care of. She work two jobs to provide for our home. She is very out spoken, you can be sure that is will speak her mind. She will tell you "I say what I mean , and mean what I say!"
 The maternal side of my family : Grandfather  a half Cherokee Indian was the oldest of two boys; a tall  dark skin, brown eyes with high cheek bones . He was the head of  our family unit.  He called his  grandchildren as well as his children  "MY Kids". He was the true sense of being the protector of the family. He was a quite man but love to have his family around him. 
My grandmother was a light brown women about 4'11, brown eyes. the oldest of two girls.  She was a short woman in stature  but was a powerful  women in prayer.  To meet her was to Love her. She would always tell us "We got to LOVE ONE ANOTHER!" We still say this to each other when we all get together.
My aunts all look alike tall  with black hair,  brown eyes and high cheek bones. They to like my mother were and are strong black women who spoke and speak their mind.
My  seven uncles (two of the seven are identical twins), height ranging  from 5'7 to 6'0 feet, skin tones were from light brown to dark brown , all with brown eyes and high cheek bones. They all took after  my grandfather in being the protector of their families. 
As you can see that one of the features that is dominant in our family is our high cheek bones that we all got from my grandfather.  The women in our family have wide hips, we got this from my grandmother. Another similarity we all have is being strong in our beliefs. 
The paternal side of  my family:
I know very little about my father 's family, for my mother and father divorced when my sister and I were little girls.
My grandmother was short , brown skin, brown eyes and black hair.
My grandfather died when my father was young. 
Uncles and Aunts  that I seen were all medium brown skin,big brown eyes, wide nose and large dark lips.
I have the hips, high cheek bones and smile from my mother and from my dad I have his nose and lips and I walk just like him and my paternal grandmother with knock knees.  Mostly everything that I learned, how I talk, what I eat, my beliefs, my morals, my way of life I watched, was taught, and learned from my maternal side.

My grandmother was not so lucky to have boys. MY uncle has down syndrome and other things going on. He has the mind of a 5 year old. He had a surgery when he was little and my grandmother said it left him mute. he is very friendly and lovable. he has been in a cared facility since he was a little boy.
