What do you think happens at the end of The Giver? Why would Lowry end the piece this way?

Many people hated the way the Giver ending on such a cliffhanger, but in my personal opinion I believe this to be a great ending. The reason why I love this ending so much is because it’s up for discussion and anyone’s opinion could be right. This allows the audience to be more engaged in the book. What happened? Are they dead? Did they reach Elsewhere? These are the kind of things the author strives for, they want the audience to ask questions,  investigate and then observe their reasoning. 

I believe that at the ending of the book the Giver, when all goes white and they hear music and recall on the memories of his first sled ride, the two young boys finally reached Elsewhere. You might be thinking of Elsewhere as a actual destination or place that you can physically be in, but to my understanding it might just be a state of mind. This is why most of the people are very disapointed, they were expecting and actual destination. But, never in the book did they refer to Elsewhere as an actual place. They only mentioned it to be where the people go after release. We all know what release really means. After one dies their mind and soul lives on in Elsewhere a place where sameness is nowhere to be seen and pleasent music and memories flow in the infinity. So yes, Jonas and baby Gabriel are deceased but, aren’t they in a better place. Isn’t the infinity, the real utopian discovery, the best place to be?
