Who in our community may face challenges in their environment?

What are some challenges/barriers that they may face?

What could be the source of such challenges/barriers?

Many people in our community may face challenges in their environment such as the elderly, those who are discriminated against, and the disabled. For the elderly, they may find it hard to do some of the things that the used to be able to do as they have aged. Many people also think that they are a burden to the society since the government has to pay pensions and bonuses to them each month. The tax payers will then find them a bother and treat them badly. People have stereotypes and think that they receive less education and are not smart, resulting in discrimination. Another group of people that often faced challenges in their environment are people whom are not part of majority, for example a different ethnic group. They are often seen as different and many would make fun or discriminate them, pointing out their difference to make them feel bad even though there is actually nothing to be ashamed about. Lastly, the disabled often face challenges in their environment. Those physically disabled would have difficulty moving from place to place, while those mentally challenged are often seen as unsound for they have different thinkings compared to majority. Even though they did not want to be disabled either physically or mentally, many in their environment are still unable to accept them and therefore exclude them or sometimes even mock them.

Some people will look down on me because they think I’m old and cannot contribute to the society. People might judge me because they think burden to the community. I might be mistreated by my family as they might think I am of no use and only adds on to their work load. However there will still be people who sympathise with me and care for me because of my health issues. There is also healthcare facilities and medical discounts for old people like me and I really appreciate it.

Everyday, I am brought by my family from home to school and back, leaving me no choices of where I want to go and who I want to be. I am also quite lonely as I don’t have much friend and the sense of isolation even worsened when I realise people talking bad things behind me.

Think for a moment what your environment would be like if you are:
- an elderly lady who is living alone
I would be judged or pitied by people for living alone and be thought of as a lonely old person and my house would be messy because I may not have enough energy to clean up the house. I would feel ostracised from society as my family members are also not here to give me the financial or physical support that I need. I may also be embarrassed to ask for help and fear that others would think that I am weak and dependant.
