A SDG:1. Protect marine ecosystems: Prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, especially from land - based activities, such as pollution from chemicals, plastics, and oil spills.

2. Promote sustainable fishing: Ensure sustainable management and conservation of fish stocks, end overfishing, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing practices.

3. Protect coastal areas: Protect and restore coastal and marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds, which are important for coastal protection, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

B: • Biodiversity conservation: The oceans are home to a vast array of species. Protecting marine ecosystems is crucial for maintaining biodiversity, which is essential for the stability and health of the entire planet. For example, coral reefs support a high diversity of marine life and provide habitats for numerous species.

• Climate regulation: Oceans play a vital role in regulating the Earth's climate. They absorb a large amount of carbon dioxide and heat, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Phytoplankton in the ocean also produce a significant portion of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis.

C: Because oceans absorb about 25% of the carbon dioxide emissions and 90% of the excess heat from global warming. Phytoplankton in the ocean also produce a significant amount of oxygen through photosynthesis, which helps maintain the balance of the global ecosystem. Protecting marine ecosystems can enhance the ocean's ability to regulate the climate.

D: • Pollution: Marine pollution from various sources is a major issue. Land - based activities release chemicals, plastics, and oil into the ocean, while agricultural runoff brings excess nutrients, causing harmful algal blooms.

• Overfishing: Many fish stocks are overexploited due to high - demand for seafood and ineffective management. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing further exacerbates the problem, threatening the balance of marine ecosystems.

E: People can use reusable bags, bottles, and containers to reduce plastic waste that often ends up in the ocean.

a) The goal of SDG 14 (Sustainable Development Goal 14) is to "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development."

Key Targets of SDG 14 Include:

1. Reduce Marine Pollution – Minimize marine debris, especially plastic, and nutrient pollution by 2025.

2. Protect Marine Ecosystems – Sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts.

3. Reduce Ocean Acidification – Address the impacts of ocean acidification through science and global cooperation.

4. Sustainable Fishing – Regulate harvesting, end overfishing, illegal fishing, and destructive practices by 2020 (later adjusted due to delays).

5. Conserve Coastal & Marine Areas – Conserve at least 10% of coastal and marine areas by 2020 (progress ongoing).

6. End Harmful Fisheries Subsidies – Prohibit subsidies that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing (WTO agreement in 2022 was a step forward).

7. Increase Economic Benefits – Enhance sustainable use of marine resources to benefit small island states and least-developed countries..

b)Oceans cover 71% of Earth’s surface, provide food (fish for billions), regulate climate, and produce oxygen. However, they face threats like plastic pollution, overfishing, coral bleaching, and rising sea temperatures. SDG 14 aims to ensure healthy oceans for future generations while supporting livelihoods dependent on marine resources.

c) SDG 14 (Life Below Water) is deeply connected to climate change because oceans play a critical role in regulating the Earth’s climate, while climate change severely impacts marine ecosystems. Here’s how they interact:

1.
Healthy oceans and seas are essential to our existence. They cover 70 percent of our planet and we rely on them for food, energy and water. Yet, we have managed to do tremendous damage to these precious resources. We must protect them by eliminating pollution and overfishing and immediately start to responsibly manage and protect all marine life around the world.
