Great Films of All Times Watch List: 'Raise The Red Lantern' by Zhang Yimou (1991)

Raise the Red Lantern is a 1991 Chinese-language romantic drama film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Gong Li. It is an adaptation by Ni Zhen [zh] of the 1990 novella Raise the Red Lantern (originally Wives and Concubines) by Su Tong. The film was later adapted into an acclaimed ballet of the same title by the National Ballet of China, also directed by Zhang.
Set in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young woman who becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy man during the Warlord Era. It is noted for its opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colours. The film was shot in the Qiao Family Compound near the ancient city of Pingyao, in Shanxi Province.

Please watch and write a reflection on how the uses of colors, architecture, light and sound helps the narrative line. Exemplify in a sequence.

Feelings after watching：

The film's clever use of color satirizes the ideas of the feudal society of the time. The color red is supposed to represent festivity, but in the film, the red coat corresponds to the status of the wives among the many wives. Whoever wears the red coat will be favored by the master, and it also represents whoever has the most power to speak in the courtyard, and no matter what they do, they will do it soon, so several wives are competing against each other. Meanwhile, in terms of architecture, the courtyard is surrounded by high walls, enclosing people in the courtyard, like a prison, so that people enter and never come out, only to be tortured inside. Music, on the other hand, switches between joy and sorrow. In the midst of joyful activities, music sounds in the garden, yet the protagonist is in a sad mood, writing sorrow in a musical scene, so that sorrow is highlighted.

I experimented with using only three primary colors and black and white pigments for color mixing and painting with a paint scraper.I painted a beach scene, using only a few pigments to create the picture. I believe Ihave a deeper understanding of color mixing.

This is my second visit to HKAPA. During the first visit, I visited students' works and music performances. This time, I learned more about the study pathway. I visited School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts, and asked the teachers there questions about various subjects. I'm most interested in theatre design, the works of students is very cool,The model of the woman in the bathtub was very realistic, which left a deep impression on me. After visit to HKAPA, I visited Hong Kong Drum Music Festival,the sun is very bright.

I believe that my elder female cousin is one of person who inspired me. She is now a freelance illustrator. When I was young, I started to want to draw because I saw her paintings and thought they were beautiful and I wanted to draw them too. In the process of my learning painting, she also taught me a lot of skills, such as how to use painting software. This has helped me a lot in drawing.

Imaishi Hiroyuki is one of artist who inspired me a lot. He is a Japanese key animator and animation director and one of the co-founders of Studio Trigger. The art style of Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt which is a anime directed by him affected me a lot. I inspired by the bright colors, simple line and cute characters design of it.

Unity and Harmony with Colour

Boy With a Pipe by Pablo Picasso

It’s incredibly easy to create unity with your color. However, only using that single colour can get fairly boring, so harmony steps in with colour schemes and palettes. In very concise terms, a colour scheme is a group of 2 or more colours that look good together according to the color wheel. The addition of more colours adds variety, another principle of design, which makes your art look much more interesting.

A Boy With A Pipe by Pablo Picasso is a great example of unity and harmony being used within a historical piece of art. This was painted during Picasso’s rose period, which is when he mostly used warmer colors. You can actually see that he used an orange underpainting, which is a layer of paint you add to your canvas before you actually start painting your subject matter. So even though this entire palette is complementary (two colors across from each other on the colour wheel), it still feels very warm overall.

I revisited my knowledge about the three primary colors and learned about Complementary colors, Analogous colors and Split-Complementary colors.

Analogous colors lie next to each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Split-Complementary colors

are any given color along with the two colors on either side of its complement.

The theme of paint is flowers. The reason of choosing this theme is the beauty of flowers can bring people happiness. Flowers are colorful and having sense of vitality, give us good emotions.

I created the artworks with Complementary colors，Analogous colors and Split Complementary colors in different parts. In the right part I use analogous colors of yellow to draw the flowers, like orange and saffron yellow. In the middle part, the Complementary colors of blue and orange are used. In the left side, I used red and it Split-Complementary colors, yellow green and blue green.

I started by making two value scales: achromatic scale and monochromatic scale. The two scales show the different levels of lightness and darkness from 1 to 10 for black and white and monochromatic colours respectively.

I made a sketch of a flower, I first observed the object and then depicted the light and darkness of the flower. Then follow the achromatic scale, labelling the picture on a scale of 1 to 10 for value. I gained a deeper understanding of value in this process.

I drew a picture with different value of blue (both black and white). Although there are only monochromatic colours, it is possible to create different effects by contrasting the light and dark between the colours.

Color study in abstract form

I do a color study. In this paint, I try to use different types of color combinations(secondary colors, tertiary colors, analogous colors, complementary colors, split-complementary colors).

I found that the use of analogous colors makes the picture more harmonious, calm and comfortable. I use yellow’s analogous colors in my paintings, and the picture looks very fresh and harmonious as a result.

I also found that using complementary colors or split-complementary colors can make the image look more impactful and the differences between objects look more obvious.

So at last I chose the most impactful complementary colors because they make a deeper impression to people.

Slow shows a single movement

The fast ones show continuous movements over a period of time.

In the first drawing I tried to show the faster Time and motion. I drew the different movements of a person over a period of time, the person first groomed himself in front of the mirror, then cleaned the floor, and finally went back to bed to rest.

In the second painting, I painted the slower Time and motion. I deconstructed the individual movements of the flower and the person and combined them. I have combined the shape of the flower with the clothes of the person to create a interesting effect.
