Date Read: 8/25/17
**Caldecott medal**
Genre: Picture book

Review: I enjoyed "The Little House" because it showed that many things can change over time, but you will always stay the same. I also liked that the house was identified as a girl and not a boy.

Age/Audience: "The Little House" would be a good book to read for 2nd graders because you can show them that places will change overtime.

Teaching Points: I could teach students about community and how communities can change in several ways. I could also ask them if they have noticed their community changing at all.

2. The Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein (1964)

Date Read: 8/25/17
Genre: Picture book

Review: "The Giving Tree" was sad because the boy just used the tree for the branches and trunk to build a house and a boat. However, the book had a happy ending because the boy came back and the tree offered him a place to sit on it's stump.

Age/Audience: This book would be a good book for 2nd graders because it sends out a message to always be kind.

Teaching Points: I think this book would encourage discussions among students because you can interpret this book as a happy book or sad book. It could be a happy book because the boy came back to the tree after a long time. It could also be a sad book because it could seem the boy was just using the tree and still is using the tree to sit on later. "The Giving Tree" also teaches students to always be kind to people.

It was really funny.

Age/Audience: Age 10 (5th-6th grade) would enjoy these books, especially if they are into mythology.

Teaching Points: This book teaches kids that no matter what your "weakness" is, you can do anything. Roo gets into a car accident because she was texting and slips into a coma. She is actually awake, but cannot move and is stuck in her body. One day Tilly was talking to Roo and Roo rolls her eyes at Tilly. Tilly sees this and they come up with a plan to communicate (rolls up - eyes up). They get mad at each other because Tilly has a crush on Roo's boyfriend, but they make up at the end. This book was a little too sad for me and I really did not like how everyone kept blaming Tilly for sending the text to Roo. There are ghosts in the town and they rise on Bahia de la Luna (Day of the dead). Maya wants to meet the ghosts, but Cat is too afraid. Cat puts aside her fear for her sister. My favorite part was when they meet their deceased grandma and she leaves them a table of food and they celebrate. Astrid and Nicole are best friends and do everything together. Astrid signs up for roller durby while Nicole signs up for dance and this is the only summer the two friends will be apart. At first, Astrid is really bad at roller durby, but her new friend Zoey encourages her the whole way. Astrid doesn't win the roller durby competition, but that is okay. My favorite part was when Astrid told her mom that she's been lying to her and her mom's response is "no worries; growing older and making good decisions is hard."

Age/Audience: 4th grade and up.

Teaching Points: Never give up in something you want to do.

Date Read: 9/07/17
Genre: Fiction

Review: This is a graphic novel about a girl named Callie. She comes back from summer vacation and finds out that the person she likes has forgotten about her. She can't really sing, but wants to sign up for the school performance. She is the set designer for the performance. She goes through a lot of drama throughout the book. I liked the part where the two guys kissed on stage. I think it was very brave of the author to write it and people should have an open mind to homosexuality.

Age/Audience: 8th grade and up. I would say a higher grade because there are a lot of "inappropriate" subjects.

Teaching Points: I would not bring this book into my classroom because many parents would probably be upset, but the message of this novel is to be yourself.

Josh loves basketball and wants to follow his fathers footsteps to become a basketball star. JB gets a girlfriend and Josh becomes lonely and jealous. There are a lot of heated things that get between the brothers and their relationship gets worse. Josh throws the basketball at JB's head in the middle of the basketball game. Their dad has a heart attack and dies and this makes Josh realize that he needs his brother and they make up. I liked how the book included poetry and different styles of poetry on every chapter and it even had white space where you can make notes.

Age/Audience: 5th grade and up.

Teaching Point: Importance of family and sportsmanship.

Clay gets the tapes and is confused of the role he had in her death. Throughout the book, he goes around town and lives through her. He realizes how much she went through and understands why she couldn't take it anymore. I did not like this book because I think it glamorizes suicide and that is just no right.

Age/Audience: 9th grade and up.

Teaching Point: I would never use this book in my class.
