Netiquette: Lesson Plan

Start by posing a discussion by asking students what they know about the internet, and ask about pros and cons on the board. This lesson is for specifically third grade. Explain the importance of manners online and ask if anyone can think of certain times where they were upset online and ask how they handled it. After discussing, start the video. On BrainPOP there is a worksheet that should be printed out then to be handed to each students work on in partners, the worksheet has students match digital terms with the real-life situation. For example pairing a bully with a troll. Depending on the grade level the games on BrainPOP can give students a perspective on how old the internet is but also young at the same time. It should be done as together as a class because some questions can be elaborated and understood better when you are collaborating together. Finally, there is a quiz online they can review and then do a graded version. This lesson would be done best with each student on their own computer in a computer lab or even personal iPads. Once discussions were done in partners and as a class the students can play on different aspects of the unit such as the different games available that consider of running your own magazine and being a news feed defender. Everything is easily available and accessible with the link below.

https://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/culture/digitaletiquette/

What are some basic rules of Netiquette?

Just because you are online does not mean no rules apply. Your behavior online should be no different than how you act in real life!
1. Do not be a bully! Sometimes its easier to forget what impact mean names and other verbal abuse has when it is "just online" but it is still wrong!
2. Be careful of plagiarism or copyrights because you do not own the rights to everything on the internet and can face serious legal consequences because it is basically stealing if you don't give credit when credit is due.
3. Check for grammar and any misspellings to be sure everything is clear as well as easily understood. If you cannot spell it - google it!
4. All post you put on the internet are public and on the internet forever! Be mindful of what you post and be safe about what information you put out there. You don't ever know who is on the internet and need to be conscious of possible strangers on the web!
5. It is very important to disconnect at times, never get too caught up in online life.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/about-netiquette
https://www.edutopia.org/whats-next-2008-netiquette-guidelines

You must be looking into not only the web address but the publisher as well. Not everything is credible and true on the internet! It's very important to understand that everything on the internet requires a magnify glass; we must be detectives to decide what is true on the internet, what is fake and be aware of the fact every publisher has their own personal biases.

This lesson is aimed at a 5th grade level. To start off I would have a basket full of website names on slips of paper. Each student will take turns reaching to pick a slip. Then they would read it to the class and together we would discuss whether it was reliable enough to use or not. We would do at least four or five examples of this to be sure the students are understanding the importance of website domains. After that I would hand out a sheet of paper with a short article or a couple of paragraphs from an article. Within the article there will be bits and pieces of fake news or red flags that will help the student determine if they should use that sentence or not. Once they are given the example of things to look out for, then on their own or in pairs they will have an article they need to derive certain pieces from that are considered red flags or are possible pieces of fake news. Once the students have completed this, we will have a group discussion to see what parts they thought were red flags and possibly some pieces they missed.

The same rules apply for each, if you do not think you would say it in a face to face conversation you should not say it behind a computer screen. The words and actions still mean the same thing.

Going into this project I had a decent amount of background information about news literacy and netiquette. Looking back how I learned this knowledge was from my 5th and 6th grade elementary school teachers. The importance they placed on it is how my view is based now. Being safe and polite on the internet will also help you with other aspects in life. News literacy and netiquette go hand in hand, finding sources that follow both guidelines correctly will be the most beneficial for students.

Both netiquette and news literacy are both concerned with safety on the internet. It is very important for students to know all the rules of the internet and how to be cautious of all the possible dangers on the internet as well. Netiquette is manners on the net while news literacy is how to be smart with the articles to trust and what information could be false. They're different aspects of the internet but netiquette is courteousness while news literacy is being aware of possible lies and fake news on the web.
