Building upon my beach exploration activity, I had to work out different ways to bring the beach and nature to the classroom. The first connection was easy to make - sand! Using the sandpit to simulate the beach, and recalling the freedom of movement I had on the beach we engaged in movement of the waves, of the breeze and of the seagulls. This is reflected in "Movement in the Wild: Nature as Dance Partner" (Candell, 2013) which advocates moving as if you are nature expressing itsself. In addition, the sandpit can also be link to explore the sounds of the sea and the beach. Using the sandpit as a setting, and a speaker to play the sounds of the waves, a guided meditation through the relaxing sounds can take the children to a far away place. The sounds of the waves are rhythmical, and the children have innate rhythm and the freedom to move (Wooten, 2013). Furthermore, the development of these skills through music and movement can actually progress the development of more complex skills later in life (Delafield-Butt and Tevarthen, 2015).
