They enforce federal laws and provide internal security for Canada. Canada's policing philosophy has began shifting towards more of a community policing approach. This means that the police are more focused on building active partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the community they serve to identify and solve public safety problems. The Canadian police levels are federal, provincial, and municipal. Overall, Canada's policing style is known for being community based, and they are focused on cooperating well with the public.

(Ryan Blumreiter)

Main Topic: Koban System & Other Interesting Facts

Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Police in Japan use "Koban Booths", which are small, neighborhood-based police systems that provide community policing services. They help as a public service point also, for example: helping lost people, taking crime reports and assisting with emergencies. Police in Japan heavily focus on respect, politeness and crime prevention, and officers mostly patrol on foot and sometimes on bikes as well. Overall, Japan has a very unique policing style, and it seems like the Koban System is helping reduce the crime rate around the country.

Public safety in Italy is generally strong, with violent crime remaining relatively low compared to many other countries but the nation does face consistent issues with petty crimes such as pickpocketing, bag-snatching and tourist-targeted theft especially in busy cities like Rome, Milan, and Venice. Italy’s national police force, the Carabinieri plays a major role in maintaining order and is unique because it serves as both a civilian and military police unit. They also operate specialized divisions like the world-famous Carabinieri Art Squad, which focuses on protecting cultural heritage and recovering stolen artwork. While Italy is considered safe overall, travelers and residents are encouraged to stay aware of their surroundings, keep valuables secure, and use extra caution in crowded transportation hubs or tourist sites.

Lilly Hammond

Public safety in Peru is a mixed landscape, with beautiful tourist regions but also significant crime and unrest in many urban areas. Major cities like Lima, Cusco and Arequipa experience high rates of petty theft, pickpocketing and street robberies. Especially in crowded tourist zones and public transportation hubs. Recent increases in violent crime, including armed robberies and express kidnappings, led the Peruvian government to declare a state of emergency in parts of Lima to deploy more police and military forces. Travelers and residents are advised to stay vigilant, avoid isolated areas at night, keep valuables hidden, and rely on official transportation options. Peru remains a vibrant and culturally rich country, but smart safety practices and awareness of local advisories are essential for staying secure.

Lilly Hammond

South Africa remains a country of striking contrasts incredible scenery, rich culture, and vibrant cities but public safety on many urban streets and in certain neighborhoods continues to be a serious concern. Crime rates are high, especially in major cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Where residents and visitors alike face risks of armed robbery, car-jacking, muggings and property crimes often concentrated after dark or in poorly lit areas. Although violent crimes such as homicide remain widespread, many of these are linked to local socio-economic conditions and tend not to target tourists directly. For safety while visiting or living there, it’s wise to remain alert: avoid walking alone at night, stay in well-lit areas, use reputable transport services, and keep valuables hidden or secured common-sense strategies that significantly reduce risk.

Lilly Hammond
