If held in captivity their lifespan is significantly lower because of lack of autonomy, improper diet, social isolation, confinement to small spaces and spending too much time standing on hard surfaces. Elephants also have rituals surrounding death like humans do. When an elephant in a herd dies the entire herd mourns and brings branches and grass to lay over the body of their fallen family member. Sometimes when a herd comes across bones of deceased elephants they rub their trunks over the bones, some people believe this is their way of getting information of the elephants life.
