This week in my course I learned a great deal about the different processes and skills it takes to be a manager. It was perhaps a very crucial lesson, because they are the building blocks to becoming a truly good manager.
Throughout my studies I have found some of the most interesting articles on Forbes website, this one included.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2018/02/11/ten-skills-every-manager-needs-but-90-of-them-lack/#3cce67971614
It lists the traits they believe to be the necessary skills a manager needs in order to be successful, and apparently 90% of them don't have.
Another thing I gained from this first week involved this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA
It's of Steve Jobs 2005 Standford Commencement speech. Although Steve Jobs wasn't considered the nicest man, he was considered an impressive manager. And this speech really shows us his though process.
This next article I thought was a good breakdown of the management processes,
https://hbr.org/1969/11/the-management-process-in-3-d
From Harvard Business, it goes very in depth into not just the processes, but also how the various details apply to them and how you would apply them to your business.
The final point I'll bring up is gender and management. In this article, also from Harvard Business, they talk about how women are still fighting to reach the same level as men. https://hbr.org/2010/03/women-in-management-delusions-of-progress
This article has some very good information to enlighten us to the issues facing our society.

This week we learned about things like diversity and sustainability.
My artifacts this week are articles I found particularly fitting for this module.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/dedehenley/2018/09/12/cbs-just-added-three-women-to-its-board-heres-why-it-matters/#3ebab35f6319
https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-trying-to-deal-with-discrimination-face-backlash-1525604400
The first two articles focus mostly on gender diversity, because I believe that increasing the amount of women in leadership roles can only improve the future of our businesses.
The second is focused on generational diversity, because I know that I have personally had instances when I thought that we needed less of one generation in certain workplaces. But I realize upon learning this module that it is important to have different views and multi-generational diversity is one good way of getting that.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/victorlipman/2017/01/25/how-to-manage-generational-differences-in-the-workplace/#2bdfda2b4cc4
My last artifact for this module is based on sustainability. I believe that sustainability is key when thinking about your business in a social light, especially at the current climate. Our world needs our help, and the first step is improving what we already have.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jacobmorgan/2016/07/05/creating-an-engaged-organization-by-focusing-on-sustainability-in-the-workplace/#29452378734f

In week five we had to create our own employee satisfaction survey. I found this particular assignment to be rather enjoyable, I like doing things for my classes that are interactive like that, where I can make something and have it function. One of the resources I used to help me answer the questions associated with the assignment was this:
https://hbr.org/2018/03/employee-surveys-are-still-one-of-the-best-ways-to-measure-engagement
It was very informative and gave a lot of detail about why surveys are still so important for business.
This is the link to my survey;
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QBM5HPC
Another part of this week was the discussion Executive Headhunters. I didn't use this as a resource for my discussion, but I did find it amusing and relevant when it comes to the ups and downs of switching to in-house recruitment:
https://business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog/recruiting-humor-and-fun/2016/13-differences-between-agency-and-in-house-recruiting
The author clearly had a sense of humor.
I also learned a lot about organizational cultures this week, and it made a lot of business styles make sense to me.
https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/tools-and-samples/toolkits/pages/understandinganddevelopingorganizationalculture.aspx
This article along with chapter 16 in the textbook were very good resources to help expand my knowledge on this subject.

During week six, and really throughout this course, my other management class sort of overlapped with motivation and leadership. I researched a man name Daniel Pink, who incidentally is all about motivation. https://hbr.org/2010/02/what-motivates-us
this article is a phone interview he did talking about, as the title tells us, what motivates people and how that motivation has changed over the years. I resonated well with the goal setting theory of motivation, because I work well with goals to reach and potential rewards to those goals. http://www.nationalforum.com/Electronic%20Journal%20Volumes/Lunenburg,%20Fred%20C.%20Goal-Setting%20Theoryof%20Motivation%20IJMBA%20V15%20N1%202011.pdf
The rewards don't necessarily have to be material or capital, sometimes the best reward is the recognition of your achievements.

A poor leader will also show evidence of poor motivational techniques.

This article has some good ideas for what you can do to achieve effective motivation.
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/06/opinion/sunday/the-secret-of-effective-motivation.html

In week 7 we also talked about leadership and what makes a poor leader.

https://bb.fscj.edu/bbcswebdav/pid-624339-dt-forum-rid-39565558_1/courses/Fall2018-MAN2021-04871/H-P%20Defends%20Hasty%20Whitman%20Hire.pdf
This article I thought was a very good resource as it really emphasized characteristics that show a poor leader.

Week 7 was our group project submission as well as a discussion about Toyota. Our group project went very very well, we all communicated very well and were coordinated in our goals.
This was one of the websites I used for researching the motivation aspect of Enterprise Rent-A-Car https://www.enterprisealive.com/working-at-enterprise/diversity/
It was a very good resources for that particularly.
I also used https://www.enterpriseholdings.com/en/corporate-social-responsibility/values/cultural-compass/diversity_and_inclusion.html because it includes Enterprise as well as the other holdings they have that are effected by their diversity.
While researching the Toyota discussion, I found more interesting articles about them that were a little more recent such as this one:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/toyota-recalls-more-than-2-million-vehicles-over-hybrid-system-fault-1538725425
Which involved the hybrid system that could cause their cars to lose power. This is another one I found: https://www.wsj.com/articles/toyota-recalls-more-than-1-million-vehicles-over-fire-risk-1536132145
From the other articles provided I learned that the way the company reacts to these incidents will impact the company for a very long time. Toyota needed better control over their damage control and investigation into the issues presented.
