One of my favorite memories with Dan is every time we got שעת טש. This is the one hour a day where we’d get to pull off our smelly socks and sweaty uniforms, shower (all in the same room), and use our phones. In our case, we’d blast Beatles music (specifically “Hey Jude” and “In My Life”) in our room while sitting around eating @~sinaital023 ‘s sour candies and making impressions of our commanders – or speculating whether they’d wake us up tonight for another הקפצה.

Many of Dan’s amazing traits shone in these moments. His sense of humour, for starters, had us constantly cracking up. And his love for friends and people couldn’t have been more apparent.

In addition, we have a rule where you cannot go into the shower room with your gun, so a friend must keep an eye on your gun for you while you shower. Dan’s bed would often be found piled up with guns he was keeping safe for people, a sign of his selflessness and caring nature.

I already miss him so much and I have no idea how our team could ever be the same without him.

Love you forever bro💔

- Joely

Dan was one of the sweetest humans. When I first moved on to the kibbutz I was really struggling I didn’t really feel at home there but whenever he was home from base he really made it a lot better with his humor and kindness. Even when he came home tired he would always come sit with everyone and he really lifted our spirits. Thank you for teaching me how to play poker. Moreover thank you for the biggest lesson you’ve taught me, to always be kind and try to help even when it’s hard or when I don’t feel like it I will take this lesson with me throughout life in memory of you. I miss you lots 🫶

Jordan

My Story About Dan

I’m a Swedish soldier who enlisted to the army a few months before Dan. In the beginning, I felt so alone. I struggled with the language and the culture everything was unfamiliar. I asked everyone I knew if they knew someone who spoke Swedish. Literally everyone. Until one day, someone said they had a Norwegian friend.

“WHAT?!” I said. “GIVE ME HIS NUMBER!”

The first thing Dan did was make a joke about how Swedes are dumber and since he’s half Swedish, that makes him half dumb. I quickly made sure he started coming to our lone soldier meals so we could talk.

And I felt it right away, that feeling of comfort. I could finally open up and speak with someone who truly understood me, because we came from such similar countries and cultures. That meant everything to me. To be able to come home from base, exhausted, and speak with someone who just got it. We could talk about anything from who I thought was cute to the latest drama I’d heard and no one else could understand us, haha. Sorry for spilling the secret Dan.

There was no one else I could speak Swedish with. Until my brother came to Israel to join the army too. I was so happy, and I told them both, “You have to meet!” And I was right they became friends and decided they both wanted to try for the Tzanchanim unit.

Getting into Tzanchanim was Dan’s goal, and he achieved it. My brother hadn’t made it in yet.

Just a week ago, Dan messaged my brother saying he hoped to see him in Tzanchanim.

When we said goodbye to Dan yesterday, my brother said that if he makes it in to Tzanchanim, he’ll do it in Dan’s honor.

And today he got the answer. He’s going to Tzanchanim!

Such beautiful news in a heavy time.

My brother’s journey will be in Dan’s honor.

These were his words. ❤️

- Hannah

We didn't have many shabbatot together on the kibbutz but the ones we did were amazing. We always tried to plan to both be home at the same time and when we were, it was amazing. I loved hanging out in the moadon together and talking really late into the night. Dan was one of the few guys on the kibbutz and I thought it was so funny how he would happily sit and just hear ALL the girl drama and laugh. He tried to act a little disinterested or as if he wasn't paying attention to everything, but I know he was and it would make me laugh so hard. One of my favorite memories with Dan was playing board games. I played him once in chess and immediately lost and refused to play him again. Then we decided we would teach everyone poker and made fun of everyone together (apparently he lost every game). I feel like we always teamed up together and we were partners-in-crime together. Most of our friendship consisted of us teasing other people or each other. Another memory I have with him is how shocked he was when I told him I couldn't run a 3km in under 13 minutes. He was in disbelief and starting asking everyone he saw if they believed it. He bullied me for it (of course in a friendly way 😂). Dan, maybe (I hope) I'll get to your insane running level one day 🤞. I also remember our bus rides to and from Michve and our walks home. It was really nice to catch up with him, make fun of the army together, and just know that he really was a true friend and part of the family I built in Israel.

-Brynne
