The letters discussed the inner turmoil of a soldier fighting in the war. It showed that not only were these soldiers struggling to defeat the Vietnamese enemies, but also their own inner enemies. He wrote her about the many losses and how they effected him. He blamed himself for deaths of friends of his, even if it was clear that he was not at fault. This showed the empathy that many soldiers were faced with.

Well that is how the majority of soldiers felt when ANYONE took a little bit too long writing a letter. If you didn't respond immediately to a letter that a soldier in the war sent you, the next few letters from them would be complaining about your incompetence. Which suggested that they didn't have much else to do besides write.
