Gary's letters were sent to his wife that he had married before being shipped off. The letters discussed the inner turmoil of a soldier fighting in the war. It showed that not only were these soldiers struggling to defeat the Vietnamese enemies, but also their own inner enemies. "Needless to say, it didn't help my nerves any - I'm getting too short to be shot at."
-Gary Canant, December 25 in a letter to Maxie

A man named Ed wrote his letters to his parents. These letters discussed the loneliness that every military man may have felt whilst located in Vietnam. He wrote about hundreds of things he did during the day, showing that soldiers never had anything else to do but write. Have you ever had a time in your life where you felt that alone?

Good ol' Stan was a man who wrote to his wife about the worst day he felt in the war. He wrote her about the many losses and how they effected him. He blamed himself for deaths of friends of his, even if it was clear that he was not at fault. This showed the empathy that many soldiers were faced with.

https://awwmemes.com/i/the-big-sad-life-a20fbf217ba846edafe6543d9a431fe1

Have you ever felt a certain pettiness towards any sort of person in your life? Well that is how the majority of soldiers felt when ANYONE took a little bit too long writing a letter. If you didn't respond immediately to a letter that a soldier in the war sent you, the next few letters from them would be complaining about your incompetence. Which suggested that they didn't have much else to do besides write.
