         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Part II:</strong> <strong>16-minute podcast. </strong>Computer models that show how long shutdowns must be to avoid hospital overload. Pertinent modeling numbers from Imperial College London's forecast mechanism:<br><br><em>R = Reproduction Number</em> (# of infections resulting from one case) --&gt; now estimated 2-3 ppl on average, ranges from no infections to "super-spreaders" *Note: reducing # of ppl any single person contacts reduced R in pandemic<br><em>Serial Interval  = average time</em> of infection before someone passes to someone else (4 days for current pandemic). Many cases passing from asymptomatic people.<br><br>Uncontrolled/unmitigated pandemic conditions: estimated infection of 80% of population, with  pandemic petering out by September. Following China's 3-month lockdown, will test re-introduction, but<strong> *within a few weeks of lifting restrictions, without widespread/herd immunity (exposure or vaccine, which is 18 months out), epidemic will re-seed and grow again.<br></strong>Developing a <a href="https://aidsinfo.nih.gov/understanding-hiv-aids/glossary/649/serologic-test">serologic test</a> will enable us to determine who has developed antibodies. </div>]]></description>

Two questions (and answers) I appreciate, particularly as I try to navigate my way outside:<br>1. Can you catch it from someone who isn't in the same room as you? (One of my ongoing questions.) --&gt; New vocab: fomites! (Pertinent for Amazon deliveries!)<br>2. People who feel fine now but will become ill 5-10 days from now are spreading the virus (the scenario with Rand Paul, who had no symptoms but tested positive, shutting down the Senate buildings). </div>]]></description>
