We played every day, and my most memorable game was chinese garter because I was called master-iang or master-papang. When someone calls you that in the game, it means you are one of the best players, and your playmates always want you in their team. I clearly remember the time I had a 1v1 with the other masters, and it felt like a battle of pride for me as a master-papang. Every time we played chinese garter, we were very happy, even if sometimes someone got injured. It was worth it because we always helped each other and to paly these is chinese garter is played by stretching a long garter held by two people at both ends. The garter starts low on the ground, and the players take turns jumping over it without touching it. After every round, the garter is raised higher first at the ankles, then knees, waist, chest, and even higher. The game continues until a player fails to jump over the garter. - Back in 2013, during our  family vacation in Bobon, Southern Leyte, I played Bagol-Bagol or Slipper Mannequin with my childhood friends almost every day at the seashore near our great-grandmother’s house. It was very nostalgic and memorable because it reminded me of the simple fun we had as kids. Bagol-Bagol is a traditional game first played by Tinguian children, originally using coconut shells or stones, but now often played with slippers. The game is played by two opposing players who take turns trying to hit the other player’s slipper. Each level gets harder because you need to deliver or carry your slipper toward the opponent’s using different methods, like balancing it on your head, hopping on one leg, or even doing a backbend to hit the target slipper. Answer: When I was young, I played Tumbang Preso with my neighbors. We used a tin can and slippers to play. One person guarded the can while the rest of us tried to hit it with our slippers. It was fun, full of laughter, and made me feel closer to everyone.

We would get an empty can (which usually was a milk can) and pick someone to be the "bantay", the guard. The rest of us would stand a good distance away with a slipper ready to throw it. The goal was to knock the can down without being tagged by the "bantay." It sounds easy, but it was so much fun! The fun really came down to the strategy. You had to time your throw just perfect; and then be quick enough to run for your slipper before being tagged by the "bantay". Sometimes we would team up to distract the "bantay" or help each other get back our slippers. We definitely would argue sometimes about whether someone was tagged, but that's what made it fun and a learning experience. I loved the feeling of accomplishment of knocking the can down and getting back to the safe zone without being tagged. It was a super simple game, but it provided hours of entertainment and wonderful memories.

Not only did we get to engage in a game, we also got to socialize, have fun, and engage with neighbors. Shared experiences creates a sense of unity, and is a good way to unite the community.

Looking back, one of my most nostalgic moments as a kid was playing Philippine traditional games with my neighbors. We used to play Chinese garter, jolens, shato, tubig at lupa, patintero, bahaw-bahaw, and many more. Out of all those games, my favorite was bahaw-bahaw or agawan ng base. I still remember sneaking out in the afternoon whenever my lola told us to sleep. Outside, my friends were already running and laughing, and I just couldn’t resist joining them. I even got my first bruise on my knee while trying to escape from the other team. It hurt, but it didn’t matter, I was having the best time. Those moments under the scorching sun, with nothing to worry about except being tagged by the other team, are memories I will always treasure. Sometimes, I really wish I didn’t grow up so fast, and that I could go back to those simple, happy days.

Looking back on the traditional games I played as a kid, I find that I no longer recall many of them. We used to play different kinds of street games, but Labay Tunga, or Dodgeball, is the one that has stuck with me the most.

There are two groups in this game. One group remains in the center, while the other group tries to hit them with the ball from the opposite side. The goal is to avoid getting hit, if the ball touches you, you're out. Although it may seem easy, the excitement of sprinting, dodging, and attempting to avoid getting hit always made my heart race. 

The thrill I got whenever the ball got close was what I loved most; sometimes I'd barely escape, and other times I'd get hit and laugh with my friends. The enjoyment, the teamwork, and the memories of playing until we were exhausted but content were more important than simply winning. Labay Tunga is still the game that I remember the most.

1. Way back in my childhood, my cousins and I used to play a game called Paon-paon. It was played by forming two groups, each with their own base. The mechanics were simple, whoever ran first had to be chased by the opposing team. If a runner was caught, they would end up as a prisoner at the opponent’s base. To rescue a teammate, we just had to touch any part of their body while they were in the opposing team’s base, and they would be set free.

In our version, the winner was determined once all the members of the opposing team were caught. Thinking about this game now makes me laugh, remembering how happy we were with such simple activities. I enjoyed how we were always laughing, running, and spending time together. Experiences like this truly make childhood more enjoyable and unforgettable.

These are some of the most popular childhood games, and I really enjoyed the excitement they gave me, even though I always felt a bit nervous about becoming the 'it' or 'taya' since I wasn’t really good at games. Still, I loved playing them with my childhood friends. It has been a long time since I last played, but recently, we got the chance to play Labay Lata again in our PE class. I was both excited and shy because we weren’t really prepared for the game, we even forgot to bring slippers, which are important to use as a thrower. The rules are simple, we need to prepare a can (like a sardine can) and place it in the center of a small circle. Before the game starts, we usually decide who will be 'it' by flipping the can, each player takes a turn flipping the can inside the circle, and depending on the group's rule, the player whose flip causes the can to fall or fails to make it stand becomes the 'it' or guard. Players take turns using slippers to hit the can until it falls, while the guard or ' it' tries to protect it. The challenge is that players need to be quick thinkers and fast runners, tricking the guard to retrieve their slippers and return safely to their spot. Sometimes, additional twists are added, like time limits, which make the game even more exciting.

While, Dakpanay is another fun yet challenging game. It usually starts by choosing who will be the 'it' through bato-bato pick. In this game, both the runner and the chaser need strong stamina, the players must run fast to avoid being tagged, while the 'it' must move even faster to catch someone. Often, there are boundaries so players won’t run too far or hide, making it fair and more challenging. What I enjoy most about these games is the rush of energy, the laughter, and the teamwork involved. They remind me of the joy of simple and cute childhood moments, running, shouting, and playing freely with my friends.

• Today, I remembered one of the most exciting games we used to play as kids—Luksong Baka. It was such a simple game, but it brought endless laughter and a few scraped knees along the way.

I was probably around 9 years old when I first joined a game of Luksong Baka in our neighborhood. At first, I was nervous. The “baka” (the person we had to jump over) was already crouching pretty low, but it still felt like a challenge for my short legs. The rule was simple: jump over the "baka" without touching them. Each round, the "baka" would stand a little taller, making it harder to leap over.

I still remember the moment I failed to jump and accidentally landed on my friend’s back—we both fell, laughing so hard we forgot it even hurt. Even if we didn’t have much, those days felt full. It wasn’t just about winning—it was about being brave, having fun, and feeling free.

Luksong Baka will always be a big part of my childhood. It reminds me how joyful life can be with just a bit of space, a few friends, and a game that makes everyone laugh.

Last summer, my cousins taught me Luksong Tinik (“Jump Over Thorns”) during a family reunion in a province. We drew a line on the grass, and two cousins knelt facing each other, linking their hands to form a “thorn” barrier. The rest of us took turns jumping over their hands, which got higher each round—first at ankle height, then knees, then waist. I tripped once, laughing as I landed on the soft grass, but eventually cleared the highest level! What I loved most was the cheering: even when someone failed, we’d all yell, “Laban lang!” (Keep going!) and help them try again. It felt like we were all in it together, not just playing a game.

Traffic was insane today, as usual. But then I saw something that made me smile amidst the chaos, a group of kids playing tumbang preso in a vacant lot. I remembered when we play patentero in the road and even we are scolded by our parents we still play because for us, it's our happiness that matters most. I also remember the thrill of trying to hit the lata with my tsinelas, the cheers of the crowd, and the inevitable asaran when someone got tagged. And playing bahay-bahayan, which I loved most because it teaches me to learn how to make a simple shelter and cook something vege iitables. The funny and enjoy moments during I play luksong lubid, luksong baka, luksong tinik and Chinese garter is what I have missed. I remember all of those games, which I learned a lot from it.
