One of the Students I observed has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A neurodevelopmental condition impacting social interaction, communication, and behavior and also suffers from Emotional Disturbance: Difficulties with emotional regulation or behavior that impact learning.

Classroom Climate

Calm, Predictable, and Structured
Students with ASD and ED often thrive in environments where routines are clear and consistent. Visual schedules, posted rules, and daily agendas that created predictability.

Mr. Mathias and peers model positive social interactions and encourage inclusive behavior.

Instructional Approaches

Lessons are presented in multiple formats: visual, auditory, hands-on, and with varying levels of difficulty. Instructions are often broken down into manageable steps.

Embedded into daily routines. Activities might include:

Role-playing social scenarios

Recognizing and labeling emotions

Practicing self-regulation strategies (like deep breathing)

Group work, class jobs, and games are designed with flexibility so all students can participate.
