I have recently acquired a new laptop. Since then I have been trying to copy down all of my notes from the classes into OneNote to revise in the future. After lockdown, I have been trying to juggle all of my ongoing tasks (like everyone) so I feel as if I have a level of catching up to do. I've also started to familiarise myself with elements of German culture and approach Germany from my academic perspective. In particular, I am trying to get to grips with the German Political Economy, German party system and incumbent politicians.

Once the classes for this semester have finished, I plan to conduct a revision of both Beginnger level 1 and level 2 from the university. For my PhD research I have a trip to Germany booked for July-August. With the state of affairs in Germany, I think there is potential that this trip could still go ahead and therefore I will be looking to use material we have used over the this semester.

Also, the keyboard word checks my submissions for the assignments of the module in a more precise way that offered my using the UK keyboard alone.

I have compiled my own desk on the flashcard app, Anki. In much the same way as students would use flashcards for revision before exams, Anki is useful way of revising a great deal of German words in a short space of time. As space is limited on the app, structure and justification can be difficult to include, bu the app is useful to refresh the mind, nonetheless.

Everyday I use the language app Duolingo to help my language learning (currently on a 178 day streak). While i suspect that the progression of the app differs to the classes on this module, the app has proved helpful in introducing me to a number of new topics. Everyday I try to complete at least one round on a subject matter and one round on scenario which entails much more dialogue and listening. I find that the combination of work has helped my retention of the information when presented with it, but it is not always easy to recall the information without prompt.

Perhaps the hardest aspect of find of learning German is speaking. Not least because it involves recalling the information from memory, but also in the correct case and tense, but also the pronunciation. Aside from the class and lab, I realised I had a very little opportunity to speak in German, which i found frustrating. Byway of addressing this issue I have began to spoke to reply ot my partner in German, in large part for my own learning as she cannot understand what I am saying. Once the new academic year begins I wil look for ways to speak to more comfortable German speakers (and not annoy my partner with German answers to English questions).

My grandmother also shares a love for Germany. Our enthusiasm(s) are completely unrelated, but nonetheless a good talking point whenever i see her. Because of her longstanding interest in Germany she has a list of German friends who have now returned to Germany. In recent weeks, on request of my grandmother, I have begun to contact one of her friends children to, primarily, keep in touch though the generations. For the purposes of my language learning, I have asked my newly found pen friend if we can speak in German. As they are from the Mosel region, where English is not quite so common as in the bigger cities, this request has proved helpful on a number of accounts. At the moment, this is helping with my reading and comprehension of German text, but there is also potential to one day visit them in Germany to use the language once I am more confident in my ability to do so.

In recent weeks, I have attempted to the german language in a number of audio forms. At first, it began with the usual audio tapes for language learning courses. I am unsure how helpful that kind of listening is i would often do it while walking and so making notes was difficult. Instead, I have tried to listen to more German music. Unsurprisingly to anyone reading this blog, this involved to listening to Rammstein (or more in my case). But i have tried to listen to new German groups, including Die Toten Hosen, Kraftwerk, Wolfgang Müller, Max Herre and Wir Sind Helden. I would be lying if i said much of has blew me away, but it's proved enjoyable nonetheless.

As noted in an earlier post, part of my PhD research is looking into the German automobile sector. By consequence, I am in the process of interviewing people from Germany for their insights into this topic. When conducting these interviews I have tried to use German, albeit limited, skills in the process of asking questions where possible. In part, this has helped me in practicing my German speaking skills.
