This shows that not only a good parallel between Khattam-Shud and Mr. Sengupta, who originally stated this question. But, also to ask this question sort of feels like a hint of fear of stories. Because, most stories that aren't based on true events or anything like that, end up being the most truthful, and the most talked about. We say 'it's over, Khattam-Shud: The End'." (Rushdie 39). This quote talks about how Khattam-Shud is a avid hater of free speech and speech in general. Like previously mentioned, he does not want his army and the people of his land to have their own opinions and to be able to voice their own opinions. Stories that are made up tend to use lots of made up language and words, this would relate to free speech seeing as they use whatever words they want and whatever words they can come up with to say. So, Khattam-Shud would agree with the question, mainly because it goes against what he wants, what his final goal is. On one hand, they are completely different: One is a regular human, the other is the ruler of Chup. But, they both hate fake stories, and Khattam-Shud hates stories in general. Mr. Sengupta thinks that stories that aren't real are a waste of time and they hold no meaning. One loves to talk and debate, they love stories, and this is also where the Sea of Stories resides. The name of the ruler is a play on words for speaking/talking, King Chattergy, and his daughter, Princess Batcheat, which means chit-chat. So in Gup, they love the idea of talking and chatting and having their own opinions. On the flipside, you have the Land of Chup, and to say they hate stories would be sort of incorrect. Because, it is more like the leader Khattam-Shud, doesn't want them to read stories. He thinks that them having their own opinion will make them revolt, and he is afraid of stories, because he dislikes the power that they can have. From many references in Haroun. Them both having that idea of storytelling: In Haroun with Rashid being a storyteller, and the Land of Gup full of people who love to tell stories fake or true, and 1001 Arabian Nights having a collection of stories ranging from real to fiction, which would end up saving her life. This shows that all stories hold some value, you just have to find out yourself.
