If two plates collide and one is denser than the other it will sink beneath the other plate, this would be called subduction. A divergent boundary is when the two plates move away from each other, or diverge. As the two plates move apart, the tension in the lithosphere increases, which causes it to thin out. This allows magma to flow from the lithosphere to the surface. That magma then comes out of the cracks and cools, and hardens.
