Throughout the play, Willy has touted himself as an extremely well liked salesman. This of course is found to be false; he's just a normal man with big dreams that never came to fruition and his car is a symbol of that.

Shortly after stealing the pen, Biff tries to explain to Willy that he's nothing but a normal guy, not destined for wealth nor societal success. He also states that Willy too is in the same situation; he's just a normal man that has been working hard his entire life.

Many times through out the play we see the silk stockings. Willys disillusionment seems to derive from this moment of time. Willy has mumbled from time to time about the event and seems to be the rock in his shoe

Miller wants to have us understand that dreams and hopes can only take you so far. Willy has essentially been living off of his dreams for the longest time. Biff on the other hand hasn't lived up to his expectations and as such is more grounded in reality. Willy's disillusionment causes most if not all of the conflict in the story. His refusal to accept the truth leads ultimately to his downfall and death.
