This blog will include my research of different job specifications, roles and opportunity for placements or internships within areas of Fashion Communication & Marketing that might interest me. 

The course I am currently studying can lead me to so many career paths in fashion industry specifically careers in marketing, public relations, styling, fashion photography, visual merchandising, fashion buying, creative publishing, branding, trend forecasting, illustration and so on. There are plenty of options to choose from within this study which is very beneficial to me as a student.

They have a permanent job vacancy for a Sales Advisor role which I applied for as I am very much interested on the job role. The job includes guiding and helping customers in every way, whether it’s on the sales floor, in the fitting rooms or at the cash register. The role also includes handling incoming garments and making sure the store looks attractive as well as staying fully informed about all the campaigns and sales activities.

    Four days later, they replied to me saying I have been invited to their Recruitment event where I will be interviewed together with the other group of applicants which I was very excited yet nervous at the same time since this is going to be my first ever interview in retail.

The job role is to work in the office and on the field as well as learn the basic principles of styling and retail marketing and I see this as a suitable job for my work placement as I have previously completed similar modules in my first year of fashion communication course. Another good thing about the internship is the salary which they offer £20,000 per annum.

    The only concern I have with the internship is that they are looking for 37.5 hours of work per week in the duration of 12 months. I am worried that I might not be able to comply with their request.

They are looking for a Merchandising Intern, Shoes which appealed to me as I’ve always wanted to gain experience in Merchandising. The job role is about planning and developing strategies to enable to sell a range of products that would deliver sales and profit targets. What I can offer to them is similar to what they are looking for in a candidate which is able to work well within the team, approachable, able to work well under pressure, capable of problem solving and so on. 

    Th only problem is that they are looking for a position of full-time, from Monday to Friday which could be a disadvantage for me.

It’s quite disappointing since I believe I did really well during the interview. However, I do understand why I did not get the job is because some other candidates were more ideal as some had already finished their studies and can work a flexible hours.

    Though, I still feel very lucky to be able to go to the interview and experience what it was like.

They are looking for a Sales Team Member. It is a permanent job but the type of position is part-time which is suited for my current condition. 

    The job includes performing customer service and merchandising duties on the sales floor, locate merchandise for shoppers, ring up customer purchases and operate cash registers, making sure to keep the cleanliness of the store etc. 

    During my course, it helped me to understand the marketing and promotion side of fashion. The modules also helped improve my evaluation and analysis skills and together with my capability to finish the task given in a productive manner where I could work well under pressure, I know it will make me a suitable candidate for the job role.

    Still, this might not be a work placement/internship application but it’s a great opportunity as it could lead to a full-time employment.

The job offers permanent position, where applicants are required to work in contract for both Saturdays and Sundays. 

    The job role is to offer a fast and friendly customer service, help customers to find the perfect products for them, as well as work in all areas of the store including sales floor, stockrooms, and processing deliveries. The job require applicants to have a great communication skill, friendly and calm even on the busiest days, a multi-tasker who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, flexible and supportive. It is possible for me to be an ideal candidate for the position as I believe I have the necessary skills for the job.

    Again, this might not be a work placement/internship application but it’s a great opportunity to lead to a full-time employment.

I received an email from Next, Recruitment Team the next day saying I have been short-listed for the job. After about a week, the member of staff contacted me by phone and asked a couple of questions about myself. After that, she told me that they are looking for applicants that can work on both Mondays and Thursdays in which those are the only vacancy they have left. I told the lady, it’s unfortunate but I have lessons in uni on Thursdays.
    Therefore, I didn’t get the job and the lady was still very accommodating and thanked me for giving time for the interview. 

    It was still a great opportunity to be able to apply for the job.

The same thing was said on the email I received from them.

    After the short phonecall, I was booked a group interview on the 25th September which I was very happy to hear! It was a very relaxed and straightforward interview where one activity that we had to do was to choose a shoe from the store and basically, sell the shoe to the interviewers. 

    After that, they told us that they only have up to 2-3 vacancies left for the job and they would email us whether we are successful or not. 

    Successful or not, I’m still very satisfied about my second retail interview and now, I have also gained experience what it’s like.

The role is to help for a day in their studio in Stoke Newington, where it includes unpacking and repacking clothes and accessories on the shoot day, organising samples on rail, helping fit the model, checking and ensuring all products look nice and neat for the photos.

    I would have loved to apply for the job, however, it was very short notice. The photoshoot will happen the day after they posted this.

We went to The Pier Hill Lift also known as "The Cliff Lift". Most of the photos that we took where against the sunlight which made the photos quite harsh.

    During the test shoot and scouting for location, I learned that this might not be a good place to do the final photoshoot since it doesn't give off the street-style theme.

    What I learned from my mistake is to not take photographs against the light. There are lot of potential images that we can use for the ASBO magazine. Since the place is mostly vacant, it was perfect for the model to roller skate while I take the photos. This gives off fun and streety effect.
    Nearing the end of the photoshoot, it started drizzling, therefore, next time we need to check the weather forecast beforehand as it might delay the whole photoshoot.

For instance, one of the members of the team, Debbie, was not available the last few weeks of planning especially during the last meetings because of personal issues. Therefore, Jasmine and I had to come up with last minute solutions for the final photoshoot such as scouting for different location since we're not allowed to shoot inside the arcade across the Southend seafront. Another issue is with one of the model who did not turn up for the final shoot so we have to sourced a different model asap. Other than that, we managed to pull the shoot off together. The first day, Jasmine and I brought different clothes for the models so we could mix and match them with the Fashion Design garments. We've also brought a variety of accessories from berets to sunglasses and jewelries. On the second day of the photoshoot, Debbie turned up which was great. Each of us brought suitcase to put all the garments and equipment in. Before the start of the photoshoot for day 2, we also went to the final location which is the Adventure Inside to scout the place and get an idea on different poses for the models. Lastly, we visited a shop to buy different sweets like lollies as props for the models.

    Working independently, I learnt how to manage the time wisely. My organisational and networking skills were also enhanced. I had to contact different people to check who is willing to model for the shoot. Once that is done, I then set up a date (with approval of the team) for the test shoot and styling of the models as well as the final photoshoot. For the creative skills, I learnt how to test different settings in my DSLR camera that goes well with different locations. For instance, I used the normal AV mode to take pictures for the rooftop photoshoot. I then brought my portable macro led ring light with 1/4-inch thread mount for the camera suitable for the arcade-theme photoshoot or night photography. My editing skills were also enhanced. Some of the good shots were a bit dark, and using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, I was able to brightened those images as well as make them very contrasted. I learnt how to be a team player to my group, from basic interpersonal skills such as contacting potential models and working closely with my colleagues on the group project. 
    Furthermore, my planning and organisation skills were also enhanced, from sourcing for locations and ideas for the photoshoot to setting up dates for test shoots and final photoshoots. This goes hand in hand with being punctual and meeting deadlines, which are all essential to being productive in the workplace. This is one of the traits that are highly sought after in an employee. 
    Another skills that I get to develop is problem-solving, where I was able to find solutions to issues. This also includes being flexible to changing conditions such as being able to cater to the availability of the models. For example, our female models are only available to do the photoshoots for a maximum of 3 hours since they have their lessons as well. One of our male model is a contact from outside college, therefore, I had to find out the only times he's available. 
    Going into a creative industry, most jobs now require technical skills or knowledge about computer hardware. Personally, I am quite confident on using editing softwares in the computer and this skill has been helpful for me in order to come up with final and more polished photographs. My team was able to carry out the job smoothly with the guidance of our tutors. Another strength is that the editor of ASBO Magazine which is Davide is also present on every meeting. This is good because it will help us to know what his plans for us.

    WEAKNESSES - Throughout the work placement, my team wasn't able to visit the ASBO Magazine office. We were not able to experience or feel what a publication office is like which I believe is one of the weaknesses. Furthermore, the editor of ASBO which is Davide was not present on either photoshoot which could be a weakness as it would be nice for him to be there to guide us during the photoshoot as he knows more about what his vision is for this project.

    OPPORTUNITIES - It will be nice to be able to visit the ASBO office and have a tour on the place. Another opportunity is to be able to work closely within the official ASBO Magazine team instead of just giving us task to do by ourselves. Furthermore, it will be a great opportunity to work closely with Davide on any future projects in order to learn things from the editor himself.

    THREATS - Working on our first project, one threat is that there will be models who backs out or couldn't make it on the day of the photoshoot. The studio already has a white background which is perfect for the film noir style shoot. I asked the actors to wear any black & white clothing with strong silhouettes. The rehearsal went really well knowing it's only the first day. The actors were really cooperative. We were also given guidance by our tutor and the performing art students' own tutor. I told them my idea and they were happy to re-enact the 'Deep In Vogue' and the 'Madonna - Vogue' music video but they've incorporated it with their own style.
    However, for this rehearsal, we did not use any artificial or softbox lighting which makes the filming quite low quality.     The actors are also wearing a more streetwear outfits compared to the first rehearsal. This is because the project is to create 'Deep in Vogue' inspired video but with ASBO twist. ASBO Magazine is known for their street style.
    For the final shoot on 2nd May, I will have to manage the time wisely as not only I will be trying to film the actors in white background, I will also have to use a black or any dark background for the second shoot inspired by the 'Madonna - Vogue'.     During the project, I learnt to be a team player, from communicating to my group about our ideas and visions to contacting the people taking part to this project such as the Performing Arts students as well as the studio technician to help us with the lighting.
    I have also learnt to develop my problem-solving skills. This includes being flexible to changing conditions like being able to cater to the available times the performers can come in for the rehearsal and for the final shoot. Furthermore, I was able to talk through to one of the Performing Arts students, Natalie, who's mostly in charge of the group as to what is really our final plan for this brief. There were a few instances that the PA students were unintentionally trying to overshadow the main idea. We're actually happy that they were trying to contribute their own ideas, however, this is our brief and we are just working under ASBO Magazine and we are only following the task set to us. 
    The Performing Arts students were very understanding and on the rehearsals, they followed what we wanted from them. They were being very cooperative and professional with the guidance of their tutor.
    Furthermore, Natalie will be the one in charge of the hair and makeup on the final shoot where I will provide her at least five examples of makeup look I wanted her to copy. Natalie's friend will also be in charge of the background music which I am hoping to be done in time for the final shoot.
    To conclude, we are mostly set for this project. I have contacted Davide as he will be the one providing the Vivienne Westwood outfits in which he confirmed he will be coming in on the 24th April bringing with him the clothes. I was inspired by a photographer in New York, Brandon Woelfel, where he runs his own Instagram page. Woelfel uses different light leaks effect and bokeh effects on his pictures for added effect. 

    I edited the original photo using Adobe Lightroom to create that night filter. I then saved a bokeh effect png from Google and I used Adobe Photoshop to layer the effect to the edited photo. In my opinion, the final outcome looks okay but the bokeh effect doesn't look natural on top.
