In Year Two we have daily Phonics lessons in Autumn before we move onto Spelling, along with daily Maths and English. Other subjects include:

Reading At Home

Please read with your child at home as much as you can and at least 4 times a week.

Sign your child’s reading bookmark and keep it in their bag.

Staff will collect the completed bookmarks in on a Monday and enter them into the Reading Champion ballot box!

Please send reading books to school in bags each day.

Birthdays

We have a special Birthday tradition at Emscote! The children are allowed to wear their own clothes to school on their birthday. It means that everyone can wish them a Happy Birthday! If your child’s birthday is at the weekend or during a holiday then they can wear their own clothes on the nearest Monday/Friday.

Mathletics

Waterbottles

Children must have a named water bottle in school every day. This cannot be glass.

Bedtime Stories

Share a book and read with your child every night.

Milk

Children may continue to recieve milk at snack time. Please register for ‘Cool Milk’ if you have not done so and arrange payment. If you are registered for Free School Meals and would like your child to drink milk, please speak to the office so we may assist with payment.

Bookbags

Bookbags should be used in school as we do not have room to store bulky rucksacks for each pupil. Letters and any crafts will be in your child’s bookbags so please check these each night. If you have any letters or slips to return to school/get to us then please remind your child that they must hand these in! We want to encourage our Year Two pupils to be independent.

Your Child's Belongings

After 2 years at school we know your children are able to be responsible and organised. Please let them be responsible for gathering their belongings in the morning, securing their shoes and putting on their coats independently, to help them do so in school.

Reading

Please try to hear your child read every day and note down this reading on the green bookmark in their book. Please make sure these packets are in your child’s bookbag every day, ready to read with us at any time.

Toys

Children are not allowed to bring in toys from home. We have lots of toys at school and we don’t want your child to be upset if their own toys get lost at school.

Mathletics Activities

Mathletics tasks are set weekly and are usually based on the learning we are doing in class. The Mathletics App can be downloaded for tablets or phones. Each child has a personal login which can be found at the front of homework books.

Reading in School and at Home

Alongside our phonics scheme we will have group reading 2 to 3 times every week with each child. We will aim to listen to your child at least once on a 1:1 basis where possible - whether it's with TAs or with one of our lovely Volunteer Readers.

However, please support us by listening to your child read at home at least 4 times a week - it really does make a huge difference! School Reading Books will only be swapped on a Monday, with a library visit planned for Tuesdays for children to choose their own book to take home.

The Importance of Sleep for your Child

Did you know that the recommended sleep for children is:

3-5 year olds - 10-13 hours a night (6-8pm bedtime)

6-7 year olds - 10-11 hours a night (7-8pm bedtime)

A lack of sleep can affect many things for children including:

1. Being irritable or having mood swings.

2.Poor concentration, struggling to focus on tasks and being unable to follow instructions.

3.Fidgeting or having hyperactive behaviour.

4.A decline in academic performance, with forgetting information and slower learning.

5.Being prone to bugs and illness.

It is vital to establish good bedtime routines as this will support your child in the best possible way - for both home and school happiness!

PE Autumn Term

PE will take place on XX

We will be using the playground outside as much as possible. Please could children come in to school wearing black or blue leggings, joggers or PE short/skorts, plus a white or light blue t-shirt. Footwear needs to fit well and be suitable for doing exercise. School jumpers need to be worn on PE days please. Thank you.

Naming of jumpers/cardigans and coats

Please can you make sure all jumpers, cardigans and coats are named. Sometimes the children take them off outside or in the hall and if they are not named it can be quite a challenge to match the owner to the clothing!

Water bottles
