As educators we care for children in a place where we make sure they are safe. The word care also means to listen to their needs. According to my philosophy and my image of the child, every child brings unique stories of life that I have to respect.

I move to the questions of why and how do we educate?

If the child is competent so, why are we here? My answer may seem simple... the process of learning can happen if we as human beings interact respectfully. I have the responsibility to create specific processes and trajectories that emerge from the children´s interests.

Furthermore, what I bring to the classroom and how I model my role is my responsibility. I hope I can be the kind of educator that can give children meaningful support, resources and experiences that can help them build relationships with others in this complex world.

The intent of the BC Early Learning Framework (2019) is to guide and reinforce early childhood educators' daily practice and interactions with children from birth to eight years of age. It aims to highlight positive practices and help early learning practitioners reflect and plan for stimulating experiences to support children´s learning and development.

It is well known that everyone has images of children and childhood from their cultures, knowledge, personal histories, and aspirations for the future. A person’s images of children reflect their beliefs and ideas about children, as well as ideas about what is possible and desirable for human life at the individual, social, and global level.

According to the Early Learning Framework (2019), educators do not see themselves as holding the “right” knowledge of pedagogy and practice. Rather, they are learners as well as educators, continually reflecting. This is not to say that “anything goes” in practice; instead, educators make intentional choices inspired by the pedagogical approaches in this framework.

One of my challenges that I have observed recently is that there are still people that think we are babysitters and that we do not have any professional background. Not only do educators have to ensure that each child is learning and engaged, but we also have to make sure that we are in line with the goals of our philosophy and programs in our workplace.

My goal as educator is to guide children positively so that when they enter the “real world,” they will be capable of making good choices. To be an educator is not only to be someone that does a “job”, but it is more about to be someone who commits and advocates for the children's future. So, in my point of view, every educator needs to be confident in making decisions and trust in his or her philosophy.

So, do you believe in what you do?

At this point of my professional development, I would like to expand my knowledge, understand what pedagogy means and how I can manage and guide children to be able to achieve a meaningful education based on real situations and contexts. What I mean to say is that Pedagogy is not only teaching and learning but also is the creation of experiences that children can share with others inside or outside the classroom.

So for me, Pedagogy is a creation of new opportunities, a model of thinking that is interested in supporting children through relations and dialogues with the educator and others.
