Pop It Play

In the classroom, to promote phonemic awareness, you can use a pop it and have your students pop one "bubble" at a time for each letter sound they hear and sound out. So for example the word 'Cat' they would press three "bubbles" on the pop it toy. This is a great and fun way to teach them their letter sounds while also keeping them engaged in the activity.

This could be an activity that could be played anywhere, not just specifically in the classroom. You could say "I spy, with my little eye something that starts with the letter 'B' or that starts with the sound /b/." You could even teach them to play this on their own and incorporate it into their centers as well.

Fluency Activity- Echo Reading

For this activity, this can be done in a small group or as a whole class instruction. The teacher will read a sentence in a passage or story they are reading and then the class will echo the same sentence back to you. This is also a good activity to do with buddy reading as well with two people in a group.

Vocabulary Classroom Activity- Display Words

Make a bulletin board or a special spot on the wall where you can display vocabulary words. When speaking with students, use the terms frequently. Request that pupils refer to the words in both their writing and speech. As new words are taught, keep adding them. Once pupils have shown that they own the words by using them frequently, remove them (Brookes Blog, 2024).
