One character trait for Walter is foolishness. He shows this trait when explaining his job saying, “Mama, a job? I open and close car doors all day long. I drive a man around in his limousine and I say, ‘Yes, sir; no, sir; very good, sir; shall I take the Drive, sir?’ Mama, that ain’t no kind of job… that ain’t nothing at all"(pg. 73) In fewer words, he is explaining that he'd risk all of the insurance money into the liquor license because he wants to make more money. He's also saying that the job he currently has isn't a real job. He believes that his job requires have a certain amount of respect.

Another character trait to describe Walter is determination. He showed this trait towards the beginning of the play when he describes his life. When Walter says, “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the livingroom -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live…” (pg 34) he shows determination even though it may not seem like it. One way he shows it is by saying how he only has stories about how rich white people live. He's provided for his family through all the years by driving around rich people and listening to them talk about what he doesn't have. He's also determined when he talks about how Travis has to sleep on the couch. The tone when he's saying this proves that he is determined to make more money so his family can live better.

I personally do sympathize Walter just a little bit. Throughout the play, his main goal was to start a liquor business so that he can make more money for his family. I sympathize for Walter because he struggled to make good money for his family even though he was trying hard to. However, he became foolish with the money he was given and decided to try and illegally obtain his liquor license early. I did not sympathize for him at all once he lost the money because he made a impulsive decision instead of legally getting a liquor license.

This picture represents the greed of Walter in the play A Raisin in the Sun. Walter became all too greedy when it came to start a liquor business and he payed for it dearly. When Mama gave Walter the responsibility for the insurance money, she told him to put some away for Beneatha's schooling. Instead of doing as Mama asked, he used every last bit of the money for his liquor license. He payed greatly for his greediness after the person he gave the money to ran away instead of getting the license.

The act of Walter giving the money to Willy is the "sell you sole"(7) aspect of the play. Willy made Walter believe he was "able to shoot over the sky"(5) and get his liquor license early. From the beginning of the play Walter believed Willy's "misleading lies", which led to "greater falsities" (6).

The first few lines represents Walter's feelings when Willy runs off with his money. Right after he found out the money was gone, he was in denial and making up excuses like, "Maybe - maybe - he just got sick. He's somewhere - he's got to be somewhere." This relates to the first two lines of the song where he doesn't want his lover to leave even though she already has. The second set of lines relates to ARITS because of the anger problems that Walter has. Walter is mad throughout most of the book and puts down other people because of it.

The themes in both A Raisin In The Sun and Fences closely relate to one another. The theme in A Raisin In The Sun has to do with making impulsive decisions without consulting others or thinking of the consequences. This also occurs in Fences when Troy denies Cory from playing football. Even though Troy may of thought he was helping out Cory out by not letting him go down the athletic path, he didn't let Cory choose how he wanted to live his life. He also wasn't thinking of consequences when he slept with another woman and got her pregnant. He wasn't thinking of how Rose would react and how it would affect their marriage.

The theme of Fences has to do with the fence being a very important symbol. The fence does represent keeping people in, however it also represents pushing people away and keeping them out. This relates to A Raisin In The Sun when Ruth decided not to tell Walter about the Baby. By choosing to do this she created a serious problem in their marriage because Walter didn't even think she was capable of keeping something like that from him. She pushed him away and kept him out just like the fence did in Fences.
