1- Language has always been a big part of my life journey. Growing up I would shift between languages Spanish at home and during school hours I would speak English. This is still the case even thought I’m a college student.

Not only does language shape me but also tells the story of where my roots come from. Growing up I did have a hard time with sense of belonging in my classroom. I believe sometimes I needed instruction explained in a different way or maybe even said to me in Spanish. I have come a long way and now take pride speaking Spanish. This wasn’t the case in elementary school. Now being fluent in Spanish/English gives me a sense of belonging in my culture, community and school settings.

My family especially my grandparents have 100% influenced my language. I take pride in my family because I wouldn’t be where I’m at right now if it weren’t for all their sacrifices! Both grandparents on my Mom side migrated here for a better life! My Dad migrated here in his early 20’s. Seeing all their sacrifices they made for us I knew I was going to make them proud by going to college. We keep our traditions alive the best we can. Celebrating important holidays in Mexican Culture.

Helping my grandma wash dishes at her job will be an interaction I will always cherish. We would listen to alot of artists like Selena Quintanilla, Jenny Rivera, and so on. But one song that was always on repeat is called “Los Camino De La Vida” by Los Diabolitos. Every interaction I have with my grama is speaking in Spanish.

My langue will continue to flourish in both languages English and Spanish. I might even learn Thai in the future! I have a best friend that I spend a lot of time with who is from Thailand. I’ve picked up a few words but I am no where fluent. One day when I have more time on my hands I would live to be fluent in Thai as well. My goals for the future is to keep my fluency in both languages (English/Spanish) and use them in my career as a teacher and a future parent. My hopes for my future children is that they will also be fluent in English/Spanish.
