Esperanza explains how neither she nor Nenny she Earl, except when he leaves to go to his night job and when he comes back; and, sometimes, when he comes outside to tell the kids on the street to quiet down. Esperanza explains how Earl seems to hide from the world and not much is known about him.

Cisneros is establishing how Earl doesn’t enjoy company and how he prefers to be alone. The reason she characterizes him in this light is to put a different feeling to Esperanza’s neighborhood. A feeling of loneliness. Cisnros’ explanation of the door also reflects how Earl has someone who prefers to be alone and a someone who stays locked up in the darkness, away from the outside world.

Cisneros establishes the feeling of otherness through the character of Esperanza. Esperanza constantly feels by herself and can't rely on someone to comfort here. Cisneros uses Lois as Esperanza's fantasy of who she wants to be. Lois has everything that Esperanza wants and even more. This shows how Esperanza feels like a other in Mango Street

The stylistic device that Cisneros uses in the quote is indirect characterization. Cisneros uses Esperanza to make her seem more relatable As people in this age go through emotions that they cannot display to parents, or friends. Cisneros also uses internal monologue to show the emotions that Esperanza feels towards Sire but can't express.
