Graphic novel

Before this class I actually had no idea what a graphic novel was. But, after we talked and read about them, it gave me a clear understanding in what makes a graphic novel a graphic novel. According to Merriam Webster dictionary a graphic novel is "a story that is presented in comic-strip format and published as a book"(MariaBeforem Webster). Graphic novels are a lot like comic books because of the way the pictures appear. They have more length in terms of pictures and words and typically don't have super heroes or villains. One thing I appreciate about a graphic novel is the time, thought, and artistry that goes into it. It's one thing to write a novel with words but it's another thing to integrate words with pictures, and that's something I can really appreciate. Also, it gives the reader a more clear view of what the author is thinking and how they see the story.

The first graphic novel I read was actually a chapter of Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi, in our literature text book (Mays 22-29). This novel is about an Iranian girl living during the revolution in the 70s and 80s. I found the plot very interesting and easy to follow. In the future I believe I will try and read some more graphic novels like this one.

https://makeameme.org/meme/persepolis-was-a

Some well known graphic novelists include Alan Moore, Marjane Satrapi, Neil Gaiman, Brian K.
Short story

Short stories are defined as "an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot"(Merriam Webster). Our text book says that "a short story is broadly defined as anywhere from one thousand to twenty thousand words"(Mays 31). We are in a world that is very fast pace and seemingly always on the go, so short stories have become really popular because one can get a full story and plot in such a small amount of time. Also, short stories are very beneficial in a school setting because students can read two or more in an hour and be able to compare and contrast right away (teach like a champion para 3).

I personally have read a good amount of short stories in my time and my favorite one would have to be a short story called The Red Convertible by Louise Edrich. This story takes place on an Indian reservation with two Native American brothers who buy a red convertible together and go on a cross country trip with it. This story also has a great plot and uses metaphors well. Another short story that I enjoyed reading came from our text book. This one was called Hills Like White Elephants. This story, written by the famous Ernest Hemingway, takes place in a train station in Spain by the Ebro River. To summarize it quickly, there is a man and his girlfriend who have drinks together and most of the time this woman is looking out of the window and seeing the landscape that looks like white elephants, hence the name Hills Like White Elephants.

Some famous authors of short stories include Edgar Allen Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Rabindranath Tagore, Rorn Dahl, Dr. Suess, V. S. Naipaul, and Louise Edrich.

Sources:
“Short Story.” Merriam-Webster, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/short story.

Mays, Kelly J. The Norton Introduction to Literature.

A novel is defined as "an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of events"(Merriam Webster). Novels are also one of the oldest genres of fiction dating back to as early as the mid 17th century (universal class). In this course I have learned that a novel has to have forty thousand words or more in order to be classified as a novel (Mays 31). A novel is also the longest type of fiction in terms of page numbers with novella, short story, and short short story falling below it. Fiction novels have many different sub genres including graphic novel, romance novel, fantasy novel, historical fiction novel...

I personally have not read any famous novels in my life but one novel that I really enjoyed reading was called the silver chair by C.S Lewis in the Chronicles of Narnia series. this book is about two young adults (Jill and Eustace) who go into Narnia and end up saving a prince by the name of Prince Rilian.

Some famous novels include Ulysses by James Joyce, The Great Gatsby by F.

A short short story is the shortest of all fiction genres since they span from around a thousand words or less (mays 32). I find it quite amazing that authors can write a complete story with a plot in so few words. Since short short stories have such few words they do an excellent job of staying on topic and really only present the important themes.

In our class we read a short short story called 20/20. This story is about a man named Bill and a woman named Ruthie who are on a road trip. Bill seems to want to argue with Ruth, but she doesn't argue, she just goes with the flow (Mays 17-18).

Some well known short short story authors are Linda Brewer, Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, James Joyce, and Guy de Maupassant.

Sources:
Mays, Kelly J. The Norton Introduction to Literature.
