In order for this to happen though, a teacher leader must exist in an environment where working collaboratively is encouraged, exemplified, and fair.

If teachers don't understand that their collaborative work is fair, likely the collaborative work will not be effective. One of the important things about encouraging collaborative work and exemplifying it is making sure that teachers don't feel that they are being taken advantage of or putting in an unequal amount of work. This is something that my school isn't the best at, as some teachers put in a significant amount of work more than other teachers. However, I'm optimistic that if equal workloads were the expectation, teachers and teacher leaders at my school could thrive.

Teachers must be encouraged to work with other teachers, instead of just being expected to work independently. One way this could be instituted as a norm is through PLC's. PLC's could become normalized and encouraged both with grade levels and subject areas/departments. Giving teachers some autonomy by allowing them to decide among their team which day of the week to meet during their planning period or after school could be an effective first step. If the entire school sets the expectation that those meetings are productive and for the benefit of both teachers and students, then likely they will be effective meetings.

One way that teachers could be shown how to work collaboratively in leadership with their colleagues is through the administrative team working collaboratively as an example. This means that the principal, assistant principal, counselor, and curriculum director should all work together and display clear communication and teamwork among and between themselves. This offers an example for how teacher leaders can facilitate work relationships and collaboration with others in their departments and grade levels. If the administrative team doesn't work effectively together, then a teacher leader may not know how to work effectively on a team of teachers.
