The reflections in the story usually have a meaning of something big in the person's life at the time. An example of this can be found in Chapter 7 when it says, "she saw that, owning to the peculiar effect of this convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented, in ... the most prominent feature of her appearance," (Chapter 7, pg. 102).  This quote is referring to when Hester and Pearl are exploring the Governor's mansion, and the find some armor, the look in the armor, and Hester sees a reflection of herself, all she sees though is the scarlet letter "A" laying atop of her chest. It then says " in truth , she seemed absolutely hidden behind it," (Chapter 7, pg. 102). This is saying that Hester felt that her true self was hidden behind the armor, and that she felt the scarlet letter "A" didn't represent who she was, even though that is what others thought about her.
       Also in the Scarlet Letter, Pearl and Hester are in a forest, in a reflection of a stream, they see a image of Hester's daughter Pearl pointing at something, (Chapter 19, pg. 203). Hester describes Pearl in this as beautiful, this implies that at this time in the book, Hester has forgotten about her most difficult challenge of the scarlet letter, and now accepts herself for who she is, and sees beauty in her mistakes. Later on in the chapter, they again see Pearl, Hester's daughter, pointing into the brook, but this time, there is more emphasis on Pearl and her beauty, (Chapter 19, pg. 203). This shows that Hester is more comfortable in her own skin, and does not feel that she made a mistake when looking at the reflection of her daughter.

Specifically the symbols that had the greatest impact on Hester Prynne. The article begins with explaining why the author chose Hester to be the character she is. "In Hawthorne's eyes Hester is as beautiful as a goddess."(Lei, Nan) The author of the novel saw Hester as a beautiful young lady, whereas the mirror allowed her to reflect the evil that she committed, adultery.
