Ernest Rutherford a student of J.J Thompson, experimented by shooting small positively charged at a sheet of gold foil. Rutherford found that atoms consisted mainly of empty space with just a few electrons, while most of the mass was concentrated in the center which he called the nucleus, the alpha particle passed through the gaps but bounced back from the positively charged nucleus.
