However, that in no way means we're hoarders. Like everybody, the majority of it has a purpose and a use but, there is definitely a decent amount that can be passed on. As for my room individually, I recently went through and got rid of a bunch of things, but I know that there is still more that I can part with. I think a big reason that people (including me, individually) hold on to things that no longer has much purpose is because of the memory that is attached to it. That is always the hardest part for me when getting rid of things and I would assume that that is the same way for the rest of my family and many others. In our basement especially, although it is a big space, almost no one goes down there, yet we have so much stuff. There is certainly a section for storage, but another part of it has toys that myself nor my younger siblings have used in a long time, yet we don't get rid of them.
