The entire notion of how relationships are formed and how they are maintained is done so through a materialist lens. The world Fitzgerald describes is one where success is judged upon wealth and the way it is adquired. In this world, material wealth is the same as value. People are valued based on their monetary acquisition and this becomes the guiding focus in the social world in the novel. Gatsby is convinced that the more money he makes, the greater the chance his allure to Daisy will increase. He believes that she will love him based on his money

- " 'They're such beautiful shirts,' she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such---such beautiful shirts before' "(93-94). I was irritated at Gatsby for wanting to flaunt his wealth to impress Daisy. However, I was more irritated at how easily it works. Daisy actually starts crying about how nice his shirts are and is in live with how rich he is. She obviously is upset that she's not with him because he's wealthier than Tom. I'm amazed at how important wealth is to the women in this community. At the same time, I do want them to be together because Gatsby has probably been lonely. Also, Daisy's husband has another woman, so she should leave him. Gatsby and Daisy should elope. ―Gatsby has dismissed every servant in his house a week ago and replaced them with half a dozen others... ̳I wanted somebody who wouldn‘t gossip. Daisy comes over quite often – in the afternoons‘‖ (113-114, 113-114).
― ̳Her voice is full of money‘...That was it. I‘d never understood before. It was full of money – that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals‘ song of it...High in a white palace the king‘s daughter, the golden girl...‖ (120, 120).
― ̳She never loved you, do you hear?‖ he cried. ̳She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!‘‖ (130, 131).

From the start of the novel, we, as the readers, get a negative impression of the upperclass, as being arrogant and judgmental. we can see this through the characters. By comparing Myrtle and Daisy, Myrtle represents the failure of the american dream and the desire of wanting to be rich and Daisy represents the upper class arrogant and judgmental women

As well we can see this through Gatsby, when he decides spends a large amount of money to hold parties but he does not seem to enjoy them. This may be because Gatsby is “new money” so he has a desire to let everyone know how rich he is.

For instance in the end of the novel nick call daisy and Tom selfish as they don't care about Gatsbys death even though he took the blame to protect daisy.

First the symbolism of the silk shirts is probably one of the biggest evidences of materialism.
- "It makes me sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts before"
The fact that she would be willing to cry just due to the physical appearance of a piece of clothing shows the materialist mentality of the roaring twenties, where everything, even emotions, is driven by money and possessions.

- "Her voice is full of money"
This is part of Gaysby's idealization of Daisy, which is showing again the materialistic mentality since money is always one of the aspects that people were paying mayor attention to.

- "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then they retrated back into their money"
This also contributes to the materialistic mindset, where money allowed you to do and behave however you wanted and still be accepted by other members of the society.

We can see this through their assets upper class people life in "white palace" the word "palace" suggest they are royalty which they are not so they are faking a profile to show something they are not. Futhermore their empty houses are a represnetation of their empty souls who so they are trying to fill their hole with material things that represent their supposed success.
