This unit main focus overall is relationships among major and minor characters. The concepts, activities and exit ticket will be develop base on characters interactions. Diverse learners may require several supports, teachers may include prereaders of the texts, graphic organizers, include visuals during vocabulary internalization, concept walls more that vocabulary walls so students have access to what words to use while accessing the lessons. Read aloud, chunk texts, samples of annotation will help the students to understand the concepts. Also structured student engagement with sentences stems for interaction will allow students to participate freely and more comfortable in the lessons.

This unit is important because it explores the Vikings age period where students will understand the Vikings civilization including their language, culture, and everyday life.

The reader will support students' understanding of mythology.

The transferable skill that students will continue to develop will be key ideas and supporting details with text evidence.

This unit allows students to make connections with the Vikings through an interactive experience: The Quest. Students will go on journeys and explore as if they were a viking. This will support students’ understanding of the Vikings way of living and support the transferable skill of character analysis.

Students will gain a deeper understanding of the informational genre.

Students will work through reading comprehension of factual texts with several writing assignments. Students will not have had opportunities from K-2 to build background knowledge of civilizations. Teachers will need to supplement connections to missed prior knowledge. One way they will do this is through more in depth practice with specific vocabulary.

Writing is a key component of this unit and students will engage in writing for various purposes through short and extended constructed responses. They will get familiar with drafting through the use of graphic organizers and be able to work through analyzing their writing based on the rubric with peer feedback.

For ALL learners, we need to emphasize practice across speaking, listening, reading and writing.

This unit is important to continue the build of knowledge of ancient civilizations that they will also be exposed to in 4th & 5th grade. The students will be exposed to fables under the fiction genre. They will be able to track characters through their stories. This would be a great space to expose students to plot and how to follow them throughout each character's journey.
