A protein is a long chain of amino acids, which has four possible levels of structure. The primary structure of a protein is a result of the sequence of amino acids that make it up. This protein is then folded in a 2D plane to form a secondary structure. This secondary structure is folded again in the 3D plane to create a tertiary structure. The combination of more than one tertiary structure of proteins forms a quaternary structure.

Protein is a macronutrient which means it is a nutrient that has to be consumed in large amounts compared to micronutrients. Proteins consists of about 20 amino acids and play a key role in body growth and repairing tissue. As proteins aid in the growth and repair of our body, they also make enzymes, antibodies and hormones which are needed for maintenance and growth through the stages of life.
