One of major effects to the US and other countries is the flooding of coastal cities. The east coast is the most populated area of the US, and is also at the most risk from sea levels rising. New Orleans, Miami, New York City, and Boston are just some of the cities predicted to be at least partially flooded in the next 80 years.

Another major problem caused by sea levels rising is refugees. Predictions state that about 630 million people could be displaced by 2100. About 13 million could be Americans. Even a fraction of the 630 million predicted becoming refugees would cause the largest refugee crisis in history.

With the number of climate refugees and immigrants increasing over time, many will immigrate to the most immigrated to country in the world, the US. There will be much political debate in the US on what to do with the surge of refugees and immigrants. There could be even more debate on how the US should help smaller coastal and island nations most affected by sea level rise.

One of the major reasons this will be such a large issue for the US and the world in that we can't totally stop it. We can reduce the amount of sea level rise by about 6 to 20 inches by 2100, sea levels and global temperatures will continue to rise. In the absolute best case scenario, global temperature will still rise 1 degree (C) by 2100 and will continue to cause sea level rising. And it will be nearly impossible to actually lower the global temperature and sea levels. So if we are too late and don't act soon, there could be no going back.

Expected Sea Level Rise

Sea levels have already rose 3.4 inches since 1993. And the rate at which sea levels are rising is accelerating. Sea levels have rose an average of 0.14 inches per year from 2006-15, over 2 times the 1900s average. And 2018-19 had the biggest annual rise yet of 0.24 inches. By 2100, sea levels are expected to rise at least a foot, and that is a very conservative estimate. The highest estimates say sea levels could possibly rise up to 6 feet by 2100.
