He's happy to see others happy, because everyone is going through a hard time, with the war going on & the very hot weather during the day. At the time where it is night time & the moon is out, the war stops & everyone is happy at the moments. Everyone is enjoying themselves while they can.

They want to be like the moon because it is appealing and likable. Also because A lot of happy things happen when the moon is shines. In the book they said that everyone becomes happy and appreciates the moon in their own special way. This is because everything is quiet at night and if you look up at the moon you can see images and use your imagination according to Ishmal Beah. It calms their minds to look at the moon and feel happiness for a few seconds before reality hits them.

The moon is very significant in the book. The moon was once a sign of Ishmael's childhood and happiness, but all this changes. When he first discusses the moon he talks about how every night he was he looked at it to see why it brought peace and joy to so many. Once Ishmael's home is taken over by the rebels the moon does not shine in the sky. Everyone in the town was scared that night even nature was scared. The moon helps to show the central conflict.

Before that night, happiness is brought by the moon to all the people because it cools down the air, allows for light at night, and creates a positive feeling throughout the town. To Ishmael, the moon brings him back to his childhood because he sees the same images in it as he did when he was six.

The segment is important to the work as a whole partially because it's an entire chapter long. During this entire chapter, Ishmael builds on his family and culture using stories of his grandfather's medicine and the story about the wild pigs. The segment also serves as character development for Ishmael himself due to him learning how to survive and him trying to avoid thinking about the events that happened. This also caused him to meet with his travelling companions in chapter 9, also making it crucial.

The scene where the rebels burn the imam alive is very significant. An act this cruel truly displays the savagery of the rebels & also signifies that "r eligion is dead". Think about it. The priest represents religion & once the rebels kill him it signifies religion is dead. The one thing (religion) that people could grasp onto for comfort, security, & possibly hope for better times is now gone. Something like this can devastate a community as a whole especially considering the times they are in. The lost of any religous leader is a big deal, but in this instance it's the biggest lost of all because these people no longer have anything left, not even there religion.

This shows that not everyone has unreasonable fear of the children during these war shaken times. The fisherman has faith in his people for things to get better.
