The speech of Sherry Turkle is something that the society can relate to because it is truly happening in our daily lives. We prefer to communicate with the use of our technologies because we find it more convenient compared to having a face-to-face conversation. It is ironic how our view on technologies changed rapidly along with the development of technology. I had a teacher before who said that a typewriter is still better than a personal computer, but when I visited her recently, I saw her encoding a quiz for her class the next day using a laptop.

I agree when Sherry Turkle said that devices are psychologically powerful that it can change who we are. Technology makes us create a virtual self which is actually our ideal self because it is something that we can control. Moreover, I also think that it is true when she said that we can develop connections with the use of technology. However, we cannot really determine if these connections are genuine because we are in so much control of the conversations. We can manipulate the manner of saying our messages in such a way that even if we do not miss someone; we may sound like we do. But our actions will actually define the genuineness of the message. That is why, I still prefer face-to-face conversations.

The bottom line of her speech is I think we need to become responsible communicators. Whether with the use of technology or face-to-face conversation, we have to be responsible and honest. Technology should not be a device to isolate us from the society; instead, it should serve as a device to connect people in our society.
