After a long days of semester break, I'm finally back! And guess what? It's finally a 2nd semester yo!

So what's up? What we did in the first week? Introduction of course! As usual Dr Wan and us talked about what we are going to do for the whole upcoming semester. #for2hours. So many activities, and this time I totally brainwashed myself that it's going to be fun and exciting and all that jazz. Positive thinking! Everything seems to be so fast but under control because all of us were like shock and mumbling this and that but after the class we were totally laid back. Virtual Microbe, of course we are going to that this semester. Two Virtual Microbe okay people, with local universities and Lafayette College.

Ah~ More to go!

This week we only had an hour class because you know, Dr Wan has work to do and because we are all so laid back from last week's classes, most of us cannot answered what Dr Wan asked. So she suggested to watch this movie Temple Grandin, I look it up on the internet and it appeared to be a person. So basically, that movie is based on that person. She asked us to watch and share what is it about later in the next class.

So we learned the first topic that day and she also shared that when she was studying, journal is her best friend and we all need to know how to read a journal. We also planned on visiting Yakult factory in Negeri Sembilan! Wow! So exciting!

This week we continue learning the first topic and actually we did not seems to understand, so she asked us to see the topics as whole and to relate the topic from one and another. For example, if we are learning about a bacteria, then we should also know where do they live? Where can they be found? How is their adaptation? We should relate from one topic to another to understand it better.

What we learn last semester is not to be forgotten also. So that day Dr ask us to do What Microbes Are You? By doing research and classifying their characteristics. But because we are still lacking, it takes hours and days for us to complete that task. My group got Gram positive bacteria. So based on that we all should gather anything and almost everything that related to Gram positve bacteria. All these questions about the Gram positive bacteria will eventually lead us to a type of microbes. So, that is the point of doing this discussion and task.

We were supposed to that like The concept map.

Below is the example on what microbes fits our personality!

On week 4, we go through chapter 1 and finish that topic. So for topic 1, I learned that archaea is really something. How they survive, how is their adaptation and all. But it is just that.. I can't really imagine what archaea looks like. You know, if you said about fungi, algae, protozoa and bacteria. I can easily imagine in my mind. But archaea? Despite the way they survival the extreme condition, I cannot really imagine. Anyway! Have to do more research. More pictures of archaea!

Yakult trip! This week we went to Yakult factory in Negeri Sembilan. It was so exciting. I did do some research though. Just a little, enough for my own knowledge haha! Yakult is a cultured drink which contains billion of probiotics. What is probiotic? In a simple word, it is a good bacteria for your body. What is the name of the bacteria in the cultured drink of Yakult? Lactobacillus shirota strain. When we arrived there, we went straight into this room that was so cozy and chill. An assistant? there told us what is probiotics and how it changes our life. Who is the founder and all. Then, we went out to explore and see how they process and cultured the drinks. It was totally a new thing for me, and their equipment is so advanced. Not many workers there, just a lot of machine. They way the did the packaging and how they culture the bacteria is so fast. Yeah, the machine of course. Not to forget the workers there, they must have quite an eyesight to see those packaging that doesn't match the requirement.

The next day, we went to INTI International University to hear a talk on A surgeon opinion about antibiotic resistant (superbugs). To be completely honest, I don't really understand what the talk is about + the sounds of doors + I regret to sat way at the back.

This week we learn about protist. What I could say is all the microbes that cannot be identified stay in the Kingdom of Protist. And we did some revision also quizzes! Not to forget the crossword puzzle that Dr Wan asked us to do, I really try hard because of that puzzle! I tried so many times until I can get 100% marks! On Week 6, we did our very first test for Semester 2! Can't forget that last question on section A. I should really focus in class and do what Dr told us to do! Ugh! I'm regretting it now T_T

It was fun to learn about homeostasis, the ecosystem and the roles of microbes in the ecosystem and its interaction with biotic and abiotic. We also learnt that energy is transferred from C-C bond. Their interaction includes the interaction between fungi and plant roots called mycorrhizae and fungi with algae called lichen. Both benefit each other in a different way.

This week is the start for our first class with Dr. Irwan. Dr. irwan and Dr. Wan definitely have different style of teaching. Dr. Irwan always made us recap what we have learnt immediately right after we have finished learning about one subtopic. I was really kind of blurry to remember it immediately >.< Instead of saying the full sentence, I will always said one word that indicates that subtopic.

On week 8, we learnt about the Aspects of Biotechnology and we have been assigned to do some work and research about biotech company. My group chose the AB Enzymes company. AB Enzymes is an industrial biotech company specialized in enzymes and their applications. Since 1907 they develop, manufacture and supply enzyme preparations for industrial applications worldwide. They partner with their diverse and unique customers to support them in their process optimization needs. Their products range from food grade enzymes, to enzymes for animal feed and technical applications. The company is part of Associated British Foods and represented worldwide.

Basically industry is an economic activities that produce goods or services which will benefits mankind and environment. After we finished learning that topic, we were asked to think 10 questions that we might think it is important in our topic and compiled all of it at the end. This week, we also learnt about Microbial Genetics Part 1. We learnt about gene expression. How DNA replication works, transcriptions and translation, also the Operon theory.

Dr. Irwan prepared a few videos that can help us visualise the process more easily. The video was cute!

It has been awhile since Dr. Wan asked us to watch the Temple Grandin movie. All of us keep on procrastinating cause that's what us do the best >.< So this week we have decided to watch the movie together. It was really inspiring and motivating and touching. Mary Temple Grandin is an American professor of animal science at Colorado State University, consultant to the livestock industry on animal behaviour and guess what? She has autism and she's an autism spokesperson. I literally cried at one scene when she was building her car, which was made out of wood and then some of her boy friends came and destroyed it. She's really inspiring, the way she thinks out of the box, the way she invents something. I wish I could have her ability.

We all wrote a letter to her. The real Temple Grandin. How cool is that?
