USA expands its territory in North America. The economy is growing:

Industry in the North: NY becomes the centre of the commerce. Wall Street is the world financial centre. The construction of the Erie Canal in the north, turned NY into a global economic power.

Cotton in the South. (white gold). Cotton grows in the sothern states of America. In 1950 USA produces 3/4 of the global production. The richest men lived in the South. South thrives, but its wealth is produced on the backs of slaves.

Slavery

The founding fathers, many of them slave owners, assumed that slavery would soon disappear. IT had been abolished in England and was illegal across Europe, but with the expansion of cotton, was necessary for the economy of the South. The overproduction of cotton is destroying the ground, so the cotton moves Westward looking for fertile land, taking more slaves whit it. Northern abolitionists groups want to maintain freedom of workers within its borders. Many slaves fled to the North seeking freedom. This unleashes the first battles before the war around slavery.

The South will fight to keep their way of living.

The Nation was on the edge of a civil war.

President Abraham Lincoln wants to abolish slavery and to avoid a civil war.

1861 The Confederate States are separated from the Union States.

1862 Civil War begins. Southern states will defend their independence and slave system. but the North will not allow them to leave the union of states.

1863 President Lincoln declared the abolition of slavery.
